AMD Launches Radeon Memory; That's Right, Memory

No one ever saw this coming. We would have expected AMD to launch a new processor, maybe Zambezi or even a 7000-series Radeon GPU. AMD has shocked a lot of us, as they very quietly launched their own Radeon-branded memory. AMD will be selling DDR3 memory designed for entertainment, gaming and enterprise users. There will be 2GB memory sticks made available. Timings for entertainment memory will be 9-9-9, while the ULTRAPRO Gaming memory will be timed at 10-10-10, but with 1600Mbps MT/s. The MT/s bandwidth limitation on the memory branded for entertainment users is 1333Mbps. The memory is set to operate at 1.5V and details for enterprise class of memory haven’t been disclosed yet. In terms of design and performance, the memory should behave like any other manufacturer out there.

The move to sell memory might seem a bit odd for a company such as AMD, but it should make sense in the consumer market considering the AMD Fusion approach that they’ve taken recently. Here in India, it’s not uncommon to find manufacturers selling AMD processors with a bundled board; soon you might even have AMD branded memory being sold as part of package. Another benefit you’re bound to see is better compatibility with motherboards.
