Nintendo has just announced that the Switch will be available starting from March, and there are already 35 known titles for the brand new console. Over 80 titles are being developed by 50 developers. Here is a roundup of the most interesting titles:
1-2 Switch is made to fully utilise the HD Rumble feature in the Joy Con controllers. The game requires players to use one Joy Con controller each. The game cannot be played by using the controller in the configuration where two Joy Con controllers are attached to the Joy Con Grip accessory. There is no need to look at a screen while playing, instead, players have to face each other and anticipate the next move of the opponent.
The 1-2 Switch is designed as a staple party game, and an ice-breaker for any kind of situation where people are gathered. 1-2 Switch has a number of mini games. One of the game modes is a shootout between two people. The Joy Con controller measures the time it takes to raise a gun and fire a shot, and decides which player wins based on the timing. Other game modes include milking cows and table tennis. Each game mode uses a different aspect of the Joy Con controllers, the HD rumble, the motion control, or the infra red camera. The game will be releasing on 3 March, along with the Nintendo Switch, and is priced at $49.99 (roughly Rs 3,410).
Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario Odyssey is a sandbox Mario game, the first one after Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. For this title, Mario will be exploring far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario has an airship to sail between realms and there are a number of different environments. Mario has to run, roll, crawl, bounce, jump and dangle on ledges through cities, forests, deserts and other exotic locations. Some of the demonstrated locations look similar to that of Earth, but there are some surreal and colorful locations as well.
Mario also has a new cap with eyes, instead of the iconic red cap with the M. The cap is an important part of the gameplay. One of the moves shown involved Mario lobbing the cap, then jumping on the cap to reach a ledge that would otherwise have been too far to jump on. The cap looks like it has a mind of its own though. After the disaster that was Super Mario Run, Super Mario Odyssey looks refreshingly fun. There is a long wait for this title though, as the game will only launch towards the end of the year.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
There is a brand new Zelda game. Players have to explore the ruins of Hyrule in this adventure title. The game is a free-roam open-world title, which requires gamers to reach tall places such as towers and mountains to scout out new locations. Once the locations are identified, players have to find their own path to the locations. On the way, they will encounter some terrifyingly huge monsters, wild beasts, and ingredients needed to make the food and elixirs for sustenance. Each enemy has their own equipment and attack style, requiring a carefully tuned strategy to face that particular enemy.
There are over a 100 shrines dotted over the landscape, that players can discover in any order they please. The shrines contains puzzles based on physics or the powers of nature such as fire and electricity. There is a variety of gear available in the game, and these will have to be used according to the environment. For example, there are separate clothes for warm and cold environments. The game is releasing on March 3, along with the Nintendo Switch. There is amiibo compatibility included, users just have to tap the amiibo and they appear within the game. The game will be releasing on 3 March 2017, along with the Switch. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is priced at $59.99 (roughly Rs 4,093).
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Mario Kart Deluxe is similar to the Wii version, but with improvements. There are additional characters in the Switch version, including King Boo, Dry Bones and Bowser Jr. Also on the roster are Inkling Boy and Inkling Girl from Splatoon. There is a revamped battle mode, with Balloon Battle mode and a Bob-omb Blast mode. Every track from the Wii version is there in the Switch version, and Nintendo is calling it the definitive version of the game.
There are some new tracks including Urchin Underpass and Battle Stadium. There is a smart steering feature oriented towards kids and novices, that allows gamers to stay on the track even at high speeds. Three new vehicles have been added to the game, two inspired by Splatoon. Up to 8 players are supported in the multiplayer mode. There is local multiplayer available for this title as well. The game is actually launching ahead of the console itself, and will be available from April 28, and is priced at $59.99 (roughly Rs 4,093).
Nintendo is coming up with a brand new IP for the Switch, called Arms. Arms is a strange kind of title, that is a ranged melee combat game. Players have to equip a combination of extendable arms, to fight it out with enemies. Players can play against the system, or against one other player in a split-screen view. Arms relies heavily on the HD Rumble feature on the Joy Con controllers. Users have to move left or right by tilting two Joy Con controllers in the direction they want to go in. Each player needs a pair of Joy Con controllers to play this game.
Opponents can be grabbed with a "thumbs up" grip on the controller. There are a number of new characters introduced for the title, with names such as Ribbon Girl and Master Mummy. There are unique battle arenas including a laboratory with mysterious columns of liquid, and an environment with trampolines on which you can lob enemies for aerial fistfights. Arms is one of the most innovative games coming out for the Switch, with unique gameplay mechanics. Arms is scheduled for a spring 2017 release, and will be available at $59.99 (roughly Rs 4,093).
Splatoon 2 is the sequel to the ink squirting multiplayer title, Splatoon. The squid like inklings have been upgraded with new weapons and trendy new gear. One of the new weapons shown are cool dual wielding pistols with a nozzle for boosting squirt rate. The pistols are called Splat Dualies and include a move to dodge the Roller. 8 players can fight it out on two squads of 4 players each. There are brand new special weapons, and the classic Roller and Charger guns have been upgraded with new gameplay mechanics.
Splatoon 2 has a local multiplayer feature, where gamers can gather with their Nintendo Switch consoles to play. Online battles are back with the title. A companion app is planned for smartphones, that will allow gamers to communicate with their team members, and enhance the matchmaking process for online play. The Turf War mode is back in Splatoon 2. Nintendo has committed to rolling out content updates after the game has been released. Splatoon 2 will be releasing in Summer 2017.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a breakout title by Bethesda Softworks. Although the game took a lot of screen time in the Nintendo Switch teaser when it originally released, it was not confirmed that the game was eventually coming to the Switch. Nintendo has previously shown games in its console teaser videos that never made it to the console. It has now been confirmed that the title is indeed coming to the Nintendo Switch.
Skyrim is the game that actually shows off the graphical prowess of the Switch. This is the game that shows that Switch is a portable gaming console that is more capable than a smartphone. In Skyrim, players have to explore a vast fantastic open world, picking up quests and building up their characters. The game can be played endlessly, and gamers can build houses in the game, become the heads of organisations, tame dragons, and marry. This is the first time Skyrim will be available on a portable device. The game will release in the fall of 2017.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is set in a massive open world environment, with titanic monsters including a sky whale. The title will be a sequel to the 2010 Xenoblade Chronicles released for the Nintendo Wii. Bandai Namco is the developer of the title. The game is an action / adventure RPG title. Players will have to explore the realm, complete quests, and collect gear. Other details of the game are sparse at this time, and even the name of the game is a working title. The pricing and release date are yet to be determined, but the game just looks cool.
Minecraft: Switch Edition
There are a number of versions of the game, including a pocket edition, a VR edition, a version for the Raspberry Pi and a 4K version, so why should there not be a Nintendo Switch version? Minecraft is one of the most popular block building title, and there is a special version coming to the Switch. Users are thrown into the game world, where they will have to collect and use different kinds of blocks. Players will be racing against time to finish building a shelter before nightfall, at which point of time, the monsters start to appear in the dark.
Minecraft is a sandbox video game that was acquired by Microsoft. The classic version of the title is free, but is no longer maintained or updated. Nintendo Switch will also be getting the regular Minecraft title, Minecraft: Story Mode - The Complete Adventure. The Switch Edition will be an action adventure title. Pricing and launch dates are unknown at this point of time.
Project Octopath Traveler
Project Octopath Traveler is a brand new title by Square Enix. It is an adventure RPG, and has a unique look and feel. It is a 2.5D game, with the realm and environments made in 3D but the view moves like a typical sidescroller. The characters, including the player and the enemies are 2D. During battles, there is some 3D animation. There is a retro pixel art look and feel to the whole game. Decisions play an important role in the game. The cut scenes are made out of drawings.
