Sanjay Leela Bhansali says Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiawadi is his most personal film yet. "I spent the first 30 years of my living just one lane away from Kamathipura. Every flavour, colour, and texture that I remembered from my childhood has gone into this film."

"Gangubai Kathiawadi is set in Mumbai of the 1960s, a very specific culture. But the Berlin audience saw the film the way we wanted it to be seen: as a humane, emotional, warm, and funny story of a woman who lived life on her own terms," says Bhansali.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is a crime-drama, adapted from one of the chapters of noted author Hussain Zaidi's book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai. After the 2019 musical drama Gully Boy, the upcoming film marks Bhatt's second outing at the Berlinale.
