India had a historic day at the Paris Paralympics 2024, winning eight medals on Monday, including two gold, three silver, and three bronze. This marks the first time India has won eight medals in a single day at either the Paralympics or the Olympics. With an overall tally of 15 medals, India is on track to surpass its best-ever performance of 19 medals from the Tokyo Paralympics 2021.
On Monday, the biggest medals came from Sumit Anitl and Nitesh Kumar as the athletes won gold in their respective events. Defending champion and world champion Sumit clinched the gold medal in the javelin throw F64 category by breaking his own Paralympic record of 68.55m set at Tokyo. He won gold in Paris with a best throw of 70.59m but also registered attempts of 69.11m and 69.04m.

Nitesh won the gold by beating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 in the men’s singles SL3 para-badminton final at the La Chapelle Arena Court 1. This was Nitesh’s first win over Bethell in six attempts.

Yogesh Kathuniya won a silver for India in the men’s discus throw F56 event, his second after the Tokyo Games. The 27-year-old won silver with a season-best throw of 42.22m.

Two more silvers came in para-badminton as Thulasimathi Murugesan and Suhas Yathiraj lost in their respective women’s singles SU5 and men’s singles SL4 finals. Manisha Ramadass won a bronze in the women’s singles SU5 event, while Nithya Sre clinched a bronze medal in the women’s singles SH6 category.
Armless archer Sheetal Devi, who has become an inspiration for the whole world with her determination, won a bronze in the mixed team compound open event with Rakesh Kumar as they defeated Italy’s Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina 156-155.
