After overpowering Sukant Kadam in an all-Indian semi-final clash on Sunday, Yathiraj hardly proved a match for local favourite Mazur, who was buoyed by chants and songs from a vibrant crowd at La Chapelle Arena and ended up winning the encounter in straight games (21-9, 21-13).
It was a rematch of the gold medal match in the Tokyo Paralympics three years ago, with Mazur having triumphed over Yathiraj back then as well.
Kadam would later miss out on a podium finish after losing his bronze medal match against Indonesia’s Fredy Setiawan in straight games (21-17, 21-18).
The Paris Paralympics podium in the badminton men’s singles SL4 category would thus turn out exactly the same as that in Tokyo, with Mazur, Yathiraj and Setiawan winning gold, silver and bronze respectively.
The Indian badminton contingent won a flurry of medals on Monday, with Nitesh Kumar winning gold in the men’s singles SL3 category.
Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manisha Ramadass would then win silver and bronze respectively in the women’s SU5 category, the former losing her gold medal match against China’s Yang Qiuxia.
India have won 13 medals so far in the Paris Paralympics — two gold, five silver and six bronze. They need another seven medals to eclipse their performance in the Tokyo Games and register their best performance ever at the Paralympics.
