India vs England, 1st ODI Highlights: Hosts win by 3 wickets; go 1-0 up in the series

That’s all from all from us here. It was a spectacular win for India. Virat Kohli proved again that he is the master of run chases. Kedar Jadhav impressed all and sundry with his knock under immense pressure. The 200-run Kohli-Kedar partnership was the need to of the hour when India were looking down the barrel at 63/4, having lost Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni. It couldn’t have been a better debut for Kohli as the full-time Indian skipper in limited-overs.

Kedar: It’s a great feeling that I could win a game for my country. It feels special to be a match-winner in front of out home crowd and family. I could play this long because (I was inspired by) Kohli doing it so many times for the country, that too easily. Today was the chance to get runs and watch Kohli from other end.

Kedar Jadhav adjudged the Man of the Match for a brilliant century, and putting together a 200-run partnership with Virat Kohli, that too at over 8 runs per over when the team was in dire straits.

Kohli: This win is going to take a while to sink in. It took a special partnership to get us over the line. What a terrific innings by Kedar. Hardik finished really well in the end with Ashwin. I said (to Kedar) if we get to 150 they will press the panic button. Kedar was very calculative. I was in awe of some of the shots he played. The best learning you have is out in the middle. The only way you come out of a situation is counterattack. Once we got momentum we backed ourselved to the hilt. We bowled really well in the initial phase. England batted really well. We had a few consistency issues, which we van rectify in the next match.

Morgan: We had the runs on the board. If you post 350 you would think you are in the game, especially after four early wickets. We didn’t play to our best, but not all’s lost. Credit to India; they bowled well.

Pandya: I am quite pleased, it was an amazing chase. Hats off to Virat. It gave me confidence that I can do it also. I was keeping it very simple while bowling. The batting which Virat and Kedar showed was quite amazing.

Pandya gets a reprieve. A terrible mix up with Jadeja and he was almost halfway down the pitch and would have been out by a quite a distance had the throw hit the stumps. However, luckily for him, the throw is wayward.

India need 46 off 48 balls and are in command now. They can’t thank Kohli and Kedar enough for putting them in the position that they are.

300 up for India in the 42nd over. They need 51 runs off 53 balls now. With Pandya, Jadeja and Ashwin still there, India have to be the favourites, and they don’t need to do anything rash.

Big shout for LBW against Jadeja off Stokes. Not out given. England review it. Replays show the ball would have bounced way above the stumps. The on-field decision stays. What a waste of a review by England.

Four! Jadeja gets a boundary. India are in no way out of the contest, till Jadeja is in the crease with Ashwin to follow.

OUT! Kedar pulls Jake Ball and holes out in the deep. A big wicket for England. Ravindra Jadeja could be the man for India now, with 60 runs needed in 61 balls and he is the new man in.

Four! Kedar goes after Stokes now and gets a boundary. He would be looking for big boundaries now, and avoid running too much, having hurt himself.

SIX! Jadhav is unfazed and hits the last ball of the 38th over into the stands. India 277/5 after 38 overs.

Kedar hits one in the air, but he has collapsed on the ground. He has been hobbling for some time and seems to have really hurt himself now. It would very bad news for India if he has to retire hurt, with no runners allowed.

DISASTER STRIKES FOR INDIA! KOHLI IS OUT. A well-made 122 for the Indian captain. 

Hardik Pandya the next man in. India need 88 runs off 82 balls. Kedar will have to play the lead role now.

THAT’S HUNDRED FOR KEDAR JADHAV! It’s his second ODI century and has been an innings worth its weight in gold. India 262/4 after 36 overs.

Four! Kohli finds the gap between mid-wicket and mid-on for another boundary. This man is simply unstoppable!

Kohli and Kedar have brought the match firmly in India’s favour. 100 runs needed off 90 balls. That’s not much an equation in the age of T20s, is it? Kohli’s wicket is crucial though.

250 up for India in the 35th over. The fifth 50 the fastest – in just 33 balls.

India looks to have got over the early jitters. Kohli is playing as he is expected. But what a blinder it has been from Kedar!

India bring up their 150 in the 23rd over. Kohli and Kedar have fought back exceedingly well, bot hitting fifties and will need to carry on.

And it’s drinks. India have maintained a healthy scoring rate, but losing four crucial wickets, including those of Yuvraj and Dhoni has threatened to derail the chase. But the positive for India is that the mighty Virat Kohli is still at the crease and looking ominous.

Till Kohli is there you would like to think India have hope and he is proving his mettle again with a pulled boundary off Stokes and a fantastic cover drive off Ball to the fence on the first ball of the next over. India 80/4 after 13.2 overs. The asking rate a bit over seven, which is manageable if you have wickets in hand. Can Kohli do it for India. It will be another feather in his cap if he does.

Four! Kohli soldiers on and brings up a straight boundary. Wonderfully timed that!

OUT! Disaster strikes for India. Jake Ball removes Dhoni who tries to play a pull and ends up skying the ball in the air only for Willey to complete a regulation catch. Lokks like the scoreboard pressure is starting to take its toll. India 63/4 after 11.5 overs.

A lot will depend upon this pair now. Two of the best batsmen of the side in the crease and England have to wary.

Dhoni walks out at No 5 and hammers Stokes to the point fence off teh second ball he faces.

OUT! Yuvraj goes caught behind off Stokes. A soft dismissal in the end, getting a touch on the leg-side. India 56/2 in the 11th over.

Ben Stokes is in the attack now and Yuvraj tickles one down the leg side for a boundary.

Six! Kohli slashes outside off stump. The ball flies towards third man, and is tantalisingly close to Alex Hales, who gave his best to catch it. What matters in the end is that it is another six for Kohli and India.

Six! That’s the Yuvraj Singh we know and love. An imperious pull sends England’s most successful bowler in this innings so far, David Wileey into the stands.

Kohli throws caution to the winds and blasts Woakes for two consecutive boundaries, one on the off-side, one on the leg-side. India 32/2 after 7 overs.

OUT! David Willey disturbs the KL Rahul’s furniture. India lose both the openers with just 24 on the board in the sixth over.

Yuvraj Singh walks in at No 4, though many expected Dhoni to come in.

Six! A Kohli special. The Indian captain dances down the track and deposits Willey into the stand at long-on. India need more such shots to chase down this mammoth target. But till Kohli is there, the whole of India hopes.

The Rahul-Kohli partnership is the key now. England will look to get the Indian captain early.

Virat Kohli is the new man. He is the king of run chases and the mainstay of the Indian batting. Plays an expansive drive, but Alex Hales  at mid-off saves a certain boundary.

Out! Dhawan goes, caught at third man off David Willey. Adil Rashid fumbled a bit, but holds on in the end. Dhawan didn’t look comfortable at all, and 1 off 10 balls is not a great advertisement.

Dhawan is getting a bit bogged down. He could not open his account for the first seven balls and manufactures an aggressive shot on the eight. Dances down the track and slashes it in the air. Gets a single.

Virat Kohli is padded up, slated to come in next. The scoreboard pressure can bring a team’s downfall pretty quickly in such big chases. India will have to keep their nerves and must not let the scoreboard pressure build. For that they need to keep the runs flowing.  

After 2 overs, India are 9/0. Rahul is on 5 and Dhawan yet to open his account.

India will need to score big in the first 10 overs when only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. Dhawan will desperately want a big score to cement his place in the side.

That’s fifty for Joe Root off 72 balls. He is England’s key batter has a start. He will now look to launch into the Indian attack and up the scoring. Root, one feels, would be the difference between say, a 275 and a 325.

Dhoni may have relinquished captaincy officially, but is still an imposing presence on the field. It was more his call to go for a review for the Morgan decision than Kohli’s, and when Dhoni says, Kohli has to listen! But frankly, what a cushion for Kohli to have as a captain!

A very economical over by Jadeja. England now have a good platform and will look to consolidate. There is still Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali to follow, so expect some fireworks.

The England batsmen have put a strong show so far. Roy flayed the Indian bowlers early on, and looked set for a hundred when he was outwitted by Jadeja, and now Root and Morgan are looking to carry the good work forward. England have 150 at the halfway stage and will aim to score another 150 at least to pose a challenge to the powerful Indian batting line-up.

Another four! Tickled around the corner by Morgan. Bumrah puts in a desperate dive, but it is not enough.

India will look to attack Morgan, who hasn’t had the best of times lately. It’s upto Root to assume the lead role now.

A difficult chance off Root dropped by Umesh Yadav at short third man and England bring up their 100 in the 18th overs. And to add insult to injury, Root cover drives Ashwin for a boundary.

After 15 overs,England 90/1 ( Jason Roy 62 , Joe Root 13)

England going strong at 6 runs per over, but now their real test starts with the spin twins Ashwin and Jadeja operating in tandem.

Five runs off the first Ashwin over. England 87/1 after 14 overs.

Ashwin into the attack now. This will be England’s big test. How well they can handle Ashwin will determine their success in this innings.

Four! Outrageous reverse scoop by Root fetches him a boundary. This England team has a really strong batting and they are proving it here. England 82/1 after 13 overs.

Four! Roy cuts a delivery from Bumrah to the point boundary again. He reaches 58. England 77/1 after 12 overs.

An electric atmosphere in Pune!

The first powerplay ends. England 67/1 after 10 overs, with Roy batting on 52 off 37 balls and Joe Root 1 off 5 balls.

Roy brings up his fifty with a boundary. It has been a breezy innings from him, taking him just 36 balls to get to his fifty.

Not of nothing is Roy regarded as one of the top players in the England ODI team…

Superb fielding by Kohli again. He has been manning that mid-off position wonderfully well. This Indian team is a really goos fielding unit.

Jasprit Bumrah into the attack now. He is in form and had taken 6 wickets in the Ranji Trophy semi-final he had played recently, carving out a victory for his Gujarat team.

Out! England lose their first wicket. A brilliant thrown from the deep by Jasprit Bumrah takes out Alex Hales. England 39/1 after 6.2 overs. Hales have been ball-watching but what fielding by Bumrah, coming up with a direct hit from so far away.

Four! Superb shot by Roy. This England opener has surprised one and all. Umesh goes for runs this time around.

Four! Pandya sprays one down the leg side and Hales turns it around his waist fore a boundary. Six runs from the over. It’s 34/0 after 6 overs. England have started confidently.

Huge appeal by India against Alex Hales for LBW. Out, says the on-field umpire. England review the decision. Replays show the bowl has been missing leg stump. The decision has to be overturned. Hales survives.
