India have one match left in the five-match Test series against England and the hosts are the favourites to clinch the final match in Dharamsala. Even with a Test to go, India have already sealed the series and hold an 3-1 unassailable lead after winning at Ranchi by five wickets.
But India will be raring to go in the Dharamsala Test and earn some valuable World Test Championship points. Besides this, a victory in the fifth Test will also be a history-making event for the hosts. A win at Dharamsala will mean India’s total number of wins will be equal to their total number of losses.
India, who played their first Test match in 1932, have so far won 177 matches out of 578, losing 178. 222 ended in a draw while one match finished as a tie. With a win at Dharamsala, India will not only have as many wins as losses in Tests, but it will potentially be start of more wins than losses in the five-day format.
The stunning aspect here is that till 2000 it was just 63 wins from 336 matches and 112 defeats. From the start of 2001, India have won a whopping 116 Tests from 242 matches, suffering just 66 defeats. This in many ways also highlight Indian team’s growing dominance since the turn of the century.
A major factor in that dominance has been India’s Test record at home which is near invincible in almost last decade and half. India have not lost a series at home since 2012-13 when England won 2-1.
