As it happened: KKR win it all, break CSK's hold on title

KKR have won the Indian Premier League! Incredible scenes of celebration!

KKR 192-5 after 19.4 overs Tiwary 9, Al Hasan 11

After a couple of singles in the first two balls of the last over, Tiwary decides enough is enough! He cleverly picks his spot at fine-leg and gets four before pulling one away towards the vacant square-leg region to script an stunning victory for Kolkata Knight Riders!

KKR 182-5 after 19 overs Tiwary 0, Al Hasan 10

What a match this is turning out to be! Tiwary was out on the very first ball he faced but it was adjudged no-ball– rightfully. Al Hasan than steers one towards fine leg for four.

WICKET! KKR 175-5 after 18.5 overs Jacques Kallis c Jadeja b Hilfenhaus 69 (49b, 7x4, 1x6)

Kallis sees a full toss and his eyes light-up, but the resulting shot flies straight to the fielder in the deep. What a time to get a wicket!

KKR 171-4 after 18 overs Kallis 68, Al Hasan 1

No boundaries in the 18th over. Kallis has suffered a cramp but looks okay now. If a wicket falls now, Manoj Tiwary will come out to bat. 20 runs needed in 12 balls.

WICKET! KKR 164-4 after 17.1 overs Yusuf Pathan c Badrinath b Ashwin 1 (2b, 0x4, 0x6)

Pathan tries to sweep one— looking for the big six but he only manages to get a top edge which the trusted Badrinath has taken.

KKR 164-3 after 17 overs Kallis 62, Pathan 1

Shukla may have departed but KKR still have Pathan in their armoury. At the moment though, it is not him who is doing the damage— it’s Kallis. The South African has slammed Bravo for a four and a six in the last two balls of the 17th over. The six almost caught and the fielder was trying to throw it back in but it has gone for six.

WICKET! KKR 152-3 after 16.2 overs Laxmi Ratan Shukla c Hussey b Bravo 3 (6b, 0x4, 0x6)

Shukla’s gone for the big shot but it goes only as far as Hussey in deep mid-wicket.

KKR 152-2 after 16 overs Kallis 51, Shukla 3

Kallis takes initiative to go for the big shots now. He picks Jakati for a couple of fours… one smack over his head and the other pulled away towards mid-wicket. KKR need a run-rate of just around 10 runs per over.

WICKET! KKR 139-2 after 14.4 overs Manvinder Bisla c Badrinath b Morkel 89 (48b, 8x4, 5x6)

That’s the wicket CSK have been after right from the beginning. Bisla makes room for himself to steer one over third-man, but it’s just half a shot and only carries to the fielder. Badrinath does well under pressure to collect.

KKR 137-1 after 14 overs Bisla 88, Kallis 40

Kallis has decided to go on the offensive now. He cracks a boundary through the off-side and has moved into the forties. During the time-out, Dhoni looked to be spurring on his team-mates in a way we have rarely seen this season. KKR need 54 runs in 36 balls at this stage.

KKR 121-1 after 12 overs Bisla 81, Kallis 31

Bisla is absolutely decimating Chennai’s bowlers! He takes on Jakati first, beautifully placing a couple of fours in the 11th over before attacking Ashwin and lashing one over extra-cover for six. Kallis merely looks on as his partner does the damage.

KKR 100-1 after 10 overs Bisla 64, Kallis 27

Bisla is just unstoppable tonight! Chennai’s bowlers have tried everything to dismiss him, but he has continued to belt them all over the ground. He has added another six and a four to his already impressive tally of boundaries. KKR are scoring at a brilliant rate of 10 runs per over.

KKR 77-1 after 8 overs Bisla 50, Kallis 18

Bisla has been sensational for KKR tonight. He has risen to the occasion just when they needed him the most. But the praise will only mean something to him if he can guide KKR to the trophy. He brings up his half-century in 27 balls, with five fours and three sixes.

KKR 56-1 after 6 overs Bisla 40, Kallis 10

Can Bisla be KKR’s saviour after their skipper fell as early as in the first over? Certainly looks like that as the right-hander powers a six over Ashwin’s head before slapping another one over long-on. KKR have actually scored two runs more than CSK if you compare the scores after six overs.

KKR 41-1 after 5 overs Bisla 26, Kallis 9

It is vital that these two don’t get carried away by the sudden flow of boundaries. Keeping that in mind, they carefully navigate through Hilfenhaus’s fine over which costs Chennai just five runs. One more over to go before field restrictions are lifted.

KKR 36-1 after 4 overs Bisla 24, Kallis 6

Finally there’s something to cheer about for the KKR fans. Bisla has smashed four boundaries in this over to give KKR a much needed boost in run-rate. Morkel must be wondering where he went wrong as Bisla punishes him all over the park.

KKR 16-1 after 3 overs Bisla 7, Kallis 5

Bisla has also opened his boundaries account with a pull shot which fizzes through mid-wicket for four. KKR need more of those to get closer to their total, but need to be careful with the risky shots. A partnership is more vital at this stage than the quick runs.

KKR 9-1 after 2 overs Bisla 2, Kallis 5

Kallis needs to produce a special innings for KKR’s top order to prevail. He has started off well, finding the room for a shot and placing it for a four.

WICKET! KKR 3-1 after 1 over Gautam Gambhir b Hilfenhaus 2 (4b, 0x4, 0x6)

Massive blow to KKR’s chances as their skipper and probably their best batsman in this tournament is bowled by Hilfenhaus. The slower delivery does the trick as Gambhir misses his attempt and the ball finds the stumps. KKR need a very strong mentality from now on to get to a daunting total.

KKR come out to bat. They need 191 runs to win.

WICKET! CSK 190-3 after 20 overs Suresh Raina c Lee b Shakib Al Hasan 73 (38b, 3x4, 5x6)

It’s a fine last over from Al Hasan, who gives away just eight runs in it and gets the wicket of Raina. But that wicket hardly matters as CSK post a mammoth 190 runs— a total which needs KKR’s batsmen to be at their best if they are to chase it down. The bowlers somehow managed to keep Dhoni quiet with the captain getting only two fours in his short innings. This match has just begun… don’t go anywhere!

WICKET! CSK 160-2 after 17.1 overs Micheal Hussey b Kallis 54 (43b, 4x4, 2x6)

Hussey’s stumps are knocked out as he heaves towards the on-side but he has already made a fine contribution to CSK’s brisk innings. It is now time for MS Dhoni to walk out and end the remaining overs in style.

CSK 160-1 after 17 overs Hussey 54, Raina 58

What an innings this is from Raina! He has pulled no stops in his hitting, connecting cleanly every time he has attempted a big shot and demoralising KKR’s bowlers. He has already plundered four sixes and three fours in a quick-fire innings with a strike rate close to 200.00.

CSK 128-1 after 14 overs Hussey 50, Raina 30

Raina looks in menacing touch. He must be really impatient after seeing off a few deliveries and then belting Yusuf Pathan all over the park. He squeezes a six between two boundaries off the big man’s bowling, giving him a taste of his own medicine. At this rate, CSK are looking at a huge total.

CSK 104-1 after 12 overs Hussey 49, Raina 9

What Hussey and Vijay’s partnership did was take away the pressure from the rest of the batting order. Raina eases into his innings with a massive six over mid-wicket as Hussey nears his half century.

WICKET! CSK 87-1 after 10.2 overs Murali Vijay c Shakib Al Hasan b Bhatia 42 (32b, 4x4, 1x6)

Great catch from Al Hasan at deep square-leg! Vijay falls for the slower delivery, cannot quite middle his slog and pays the price. Fine change of pace from Bhatia, and KKR will finally breathe after what has been a very tough 10 overs.

CSK 86-0 after 10 overs Vijay 42, Hussey 40

Steady run-flow for CSK, scoring at a run-rate of 8.60 per over. With all their wickets in hand, they could go on a big hitting spree after the 15th over without any worries. Both batsmen have cracked a boundary each in the 9th over and the running between the wickets has been fantastic.

CSK 69-0 after 8 overs Vijay 30, Hussey 34

Just the one boundary in the last couple of overs— Vijay coming down the track and smacking one towards the on-side. It has been quiet otherwise, with these two taking a no-risk approach.

CSK 54-0 after 6 overs Vijay 21, Hussey 31

There it comes! Vijay picks up a length delivery from Lee and thumps it for six. That was the 720th six of this year’s IPL. Lee then bowls a no-ball and gives away a free-hit which Vijay happily steers away for four. But it gets worse for the bowler as fellow Aussie Hussey slaps one over long-off for another six. Very profitable over for CSK and that is the end of the power-play overs.

CSK 35-0 after 5 overs Vijay 10, Hussey 24

Gambhir introduces his trump card Sunil Narine as soon as he thought that the batsmen were getting confident. The plan works and the spinner goes for only four runs in his first over. But what KKR need is a wicket.

CSK 31-0 after 4 overs Vijay 7, Hussey 23

And soon after the first fours came in the 3rd over, Hussey thought it was time to go for the maximum. His sweep-shot takes the top edge and flies over fine-leg for six before he uses the reverse sweep to send another one to the ropes. Finally KKR’s resilient bowling has seen some cracks.

CSK 17-0 after 3 overs Vijay 6, Hussey 10

The first boundary of the IPL final comes off the bat of Hussey as his shot goes over the bowler’s head and to the ropes. Vijay himself frees his arms on the last delivery to open his boundaries account with a shot through mid-on.

CSK 6-0 after 2 overs Vijay 1, Hussey 5

Al Hasan has also managed to keep it very tight for the openers. Remember, Vijay comes at the back of a brilliant century in this game and will be raring to go at the bowlers. But it is Hussey who has pushed for the singles and doubles as Vijay patiently waits for a bad ball.

CSK 3-0 after 1 over Vijay 0, Hussey 3

Brett Lee bowls the first over unscathed. He gives away no boundaries and on the other the batsmen have evaded any danger the new ball may provide. A quick double, followed by a single, takes Chennai to three runs for no loss.
