Erik ten Hag was officially sacked as Manchester United manager on Monday following a string of poor results recently. The sacking of ten Hag comes in the aftermath of United’s 1-2 defeat to West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday. The defeat has left United reeling in 14th place with 11 points.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited,” Manchester United said in a statement on Monday.

Manchester United have also endured an underwhelming start to their UEFA Europa League campaign. With three draws in as many matches, United are in 21st place with just three points.

In February, INEOS chairman Jim Ratcliffe had acquired a 25 per cent stake in Manchester Unite d and the British billionaire eventually took control of the club’s football operations. However, that coincided with United enduring an eighth-place finish in the Premier League during the 2023-24 season, which is now their worst-ever Premier League finish.

United, however went onto beat Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup final in May, a result that saved Erik ten Hag’s job. In July, ten Hag had signed a new contract valid till June 2026, but a horrendous start to the 2024-25 season left United no other option byt to part ways with the Dutch coach.
