No blushing matter, this: First-time father Chris Gayle invokes infamous sexism controversy

The Universe Boss is now a father! Explosive West Indian batsman Chris Gayle, who flew back to the West Indies in the middle of the ongoing Indian Premier League season, has become father to a baby daughter. And in a clear reference to the sexism scandal he was embroiled in last year, he has named his daughter ‘Blush’. Gayle announced the arrival of his daughter on Thursday through an Instagram post that pictured him and his partner Natasha Berridge. However, what caught the most eyeballs in the post was the part where he announced the name of his daughter, calling her ‘Blush’, reviving the controversy that had Gayle in quite a bit of trouble during the Big Bash League in Australia in December 2015.Chris Gayle came under heavy criticism when he tried to flirt with a female TV presenter during the Big Bash League in 2015 and faced a fine of $10,000 by Cricket Australia for his remarks. Mel McLaughlin, a reporter with the official broadcaster of the league, interviewed Gayle shortly after he was dismissed against the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. She asked the batsman on his aggressive batting to which he replied: “I wanted to come and have an interview with you as well." “That’s the reason why I’m here, just to see your eyes for the first time. It’s nice so. Hopefully we can win this game and have a drink after. Don’t blush, baby,” he said. The incident had resulted in condemnation from several quarters, with the officials also fining the big West Indian $10,000. And for those who still thought maybe the name of Gayle’s daughter being ‘Blush’ was nothing short of a big coincidence, the next tweet made it amply clear that it wasn’t really so. That he was planning this all along: “Thank you all for the sweet and kind messages. Blush won’t blush, my baby.”

Thank you all for the sweet and kind messages 😍. Blush won't Blush, my baby 😉. 😜

Even when the whole ‘Blush’ controversy erupted, Gayle had played it down by claiming it was just a ‘simple joke’ that was blown way out of proportions. So whether to believe that Gayle has named his daughter as Blush can be left to individual gut, but don’t be surprised if it turned out be yet another addition in Gayle’s ‘simple jokes’ list as he isn’t someone to blush away from it.
