The Assembly elections kicked off in western Uttar Pradesh on Thursday with voting beginning for the first phase in 58 seats. As many as 623 candidates, including 73 women are in the fray. Covering the Jat-dominant belt of western UP, the first phase will see a total of 58 constituencies across 11 districts going to polls. Voting will start at 7 am in these constituencies according to the guidelines of the Election Commission to ensure Covid-safe polls. The polling will end at 6 pm. Uttar Pradesh has been lucky even to those political leaders who were not residents of the state but were elected from there and went on to hold the prime minister’s office.

Jawaharlal Nehru
India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, was born in Allahabad on 14 November, 1889. Nehru served as the interim prime minister from 2 September 1946 – 26 January 1950. India’s first general elections were held from 25 October 1951 till 21 February 1952. The Indian National Congress (INC) won a landslide victory, winning 364 of the 489 seats and 45 per cent of the total votes polled. Nehru won from Uttar Pradesh’s Phulpur constituency with 2,33,571 votes. He went on to win from the same constituency in 1957 and 1962.

Uttar Pradesh records 20% turnout till 11 am
Polling for the first phase of Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh kicked off Thursday, with the state recording a turnout of 20.03 per cent till 11 am. No untoward incident has been seen so far.
Among the districts, Shamli recorded the highest with 22.84 per cent turnout, followed by Hapur with 22.78 per cent.

‘UP may become Kerala, Kashmir and Bengal if voters make mistake: Yogi Adityanath
Ahead of the first phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday had appealed for support from electors and warned them saying that the state “can become Kashmir, Kerala or Bengal if voters make a mistake”.
His video message was shared by the BJP’s UP unit on its official Twitter handle. Adityanath said, “Many things have happened in these five years under the BJP’s the double-engine government’s rule. You have seen yourself how we have worked and delivered on our promises. Let me share something with you from my heart. Be careful, because if you make any mistake, all the efforts we put in in the last five years will go to waste. And it would not take much time for Uttar Pradesh to become Kashmir, Kerala and Bengal.”
“Your vote will also be a guarantee of your fear-free life,” he added.

The Samajwadi Party on Thursday alleged that voters belonging to the poor class are being intimidated and sent away from polling booths in Kairana in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district as polling is underway for the first phase of the Assembly elections.
“The Election Commission should take immediate cognizance and take action and ensure smooth, fear-free, fair voting,” tweeted the party.

A look back at how Uttar Pradesh voted in previous elections
2017: The election to the 17th Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly was held from 11 February to 8 March 2017 in seven phases. This election saw a voter turnout of 61.04 per cent compared to 59.4 per cent in the previous election.
The BJP won the election by a landslide, securing a total of 312 seats.
These polls proved to be disastrous for the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party as it was able to win just 47 of the total 403 seats. The SP and Congress had contested the election together and the alliance had won a total of just 54 seats, meaning the Congress was nearly wiped out and bagged just seven seats.
2012: The Samajwadi Party ousted Bahujan Samaj Party from power in Uttar Pradesh in the Assembly elections. The SP bagged 224 of the 403 seats in this election, while the BSP, which was the incumbent party, only won 80 seats.
BJP, which won 47 seats in the election, also lost four seats from its last tally of 51 seats in 2007, down from its tally of 88 in the 2002 Assembly polls.
2007: The election held in this year proved to be significant for many reasons. It was the first time that a chief minister elected had been able to complete their tenure. The performance of the BSP under Mayawati exceeded even what the exit polls had suggested. The party was able to wrest an absolute majority of 206 seats out of a total 403 in the Assembly.
The SP, BJP and the Congress were able to win only 97, 51 and 22 seats respectively.

Noida
All eyes will be trained on Noida in the Gautam Buddha Nagar district. In 2017, the BJP’s Pankaj Singh, who is also Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s son, had won the Noida seat by a margin of over 1 lakh votes over his nearest rival.
Kairana
Kairana is one of the most talked-about electoral battles in the state. The BJP has picked Mriganka Singh, daughter of the late MP Hukum Singh, as its candidate from Kairana. From the SP, is Nahid Hasan, the sitting MLA.
Mathura
Mathura is also set for a high-pitched battle with sitting BJP MLA Shrikant Sharma, a minister in the Adityanath government, contesting to retain the seat he first won in 2017.
Sharma is up against BSP’s SK Sharma, SP’s Devendra Agrawal and Pradeep Mathur of the Congress.
