Today we look at how the press has covered what is undoubtedly the big story of the day - the Supreme Court verdict on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The apex court’s decision to ask the trial court in Gujarat to look into the Gulbarga Society massacre and SIT report, is the lead story of every paper and is also covered extensively in the opinion and edit pages.
The front page stories deal mostly with the verdict itself, and immediate reactions from the BJP and Congress. The BJP has chosen to see this as a vindication of Modi’s innocence, while the Congress has warned against early celebrations, saying that this ruling is not a clean chit for Modi. The edit pages look mostly at if and how this ruling will impact Modi’s career. Some are of the opinion that the BJP will still not be comfortable fielding him as a Prime Ministerial candidate, while others think that this is good enough for Modi and could spell the end of the ambitions of other rising leaders such as Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj.
