A day after TMC strongman Sheikh Shahjahan, accused of sexual abuse and land usurpation, was arrested after being on the run for 55 days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Mamata government over atrocities on women in Sandeshkhali and appealed to the people to avenge the brutality by voting against the TMC.

Addressing a rally in West Bengal’s Arambagh, PM Modi said, “Har chot ka jawab vote se dena hai. Today, the people of West Bengal are asking their CM ‘Didi’- is the vote of some people more important than atrocities against women in Sandeshkhali?”

“The soul of Raja Ram Mohan Roy (social reformer) must have been pained by what happened in Sandeshkhali. A TMC leader crossed all limits…The BJP leaders in the state fought for the respect and dignity of the women here. Yesterday, the police had to arrest him (TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan),” he added.

Modi also slammed the opposition bloc INDIA for maintaining a stoic silence on the issue of Sandeshkhali horrors.

Accusing the TMC government of being corrupt in all spheres, PM Modi said, “For INDI alliance leaders, supporting the corrupt and appeasement politics is of prime importance rather than stand by those tortured by the TMC in Sandeshkhali.”

“The TMC is confident that it has the support of the minorities, but the Muslims too will vote against the goonda raj of the TMC,” he added.

The Sandeshkhali region, located on the fringes of the Sunderbans, has been engulfed in turmoil for over a month due to accusations against TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his cohorts of sexual abuse and land usurpation.

Sheikh was arrested by the police yesterday after being on the run for 55 days.
