Miffed over the hike in fuel prices last week, TMC leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday.
Mamata will be accompanied by 18 MPs from her party when she meets the PM. Apart from the fuel price hike, Mamata will also put forward her complaint that she was not being kept in the loop when deciding crucial issues, said party MP Derek O’Brien to CNN IBN.
Mamata’s hard line could see the government softening its stance to placate her. A UPA coordination committee may be in the offing.
Mamata’s threats to withdraw support from the government are however seen as a bid to get a financial package from the government for West Bengal.
While many within the government do not take Mamata’s comments too seriously, they realise that a pullout could weaken the government’s defences in the upcoming Winter session. The government also does not want to be left behind in showing concern for the aam aadmi. Hence the possibility of a partial rollback of prices cannot be ruled out.
Meanwhile, the placate-Mamata mission has already begun with Jairam Ramesh writing to her promising an increase in the limit of PM’s Gram Sadak Yojana up to 1,000 km.
