Election results 2014: Will Maharashtra be Cong's biggest embarrassment?

Maharashtra could well end up being the biggest upset for the Congress party with the leads at 1.30 pm indicating an ominous trend for the party. The party, which runs the Maharashtra state government in alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party, was leading in just a single seat, according to the Election Commission of India. The NCP led in five seats, taking the tally of the ruling alliance to 6 leads.

The Congress was leading in Nanded, where former chief minister Ashok Chavan is contesting. The NCP is leading in Satara, where Udayanraje Bhosale is contesting; Baramati where Supriya Sule is in the fray, Kolhapur (Dhananjay Mahadik) and Madha (Vijaysinh MOhite Patil) and Raigad (sunil Tatkare).

As many as 42 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra saw BJP-Shiv Sena candidates leading, a huge jump for the alliance.

Even exit polls had not predicted such a major win for the saffron alliance in the state, which goes to Assembly polls later this year. The Shiv Sena is leading in 18 of these 44 seats.

Among those trailing by a large margin were Mumbai South MP Milind Deora, Mumbai North-Central MP Priya Dutt and Mumbai North MP Sanjay Nirupam.

The state BJP lost no time in demanding the resignation of the state government led by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.

It is not that we want this government’s dismissal just because Modi has come to power. This government should own up moral responsibility and face Assembly elections immediately," state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis said
