While the Congress high commnand is yet to state what role it wants Rahul Gandhi to play, many view his ascension as a positive thing. Vinod Mehta, Editorial chairman of the Outlook group, welcomed the move saying that Rahul Gandhi was the only hope for the party to revive it.

“Congress has no plan B. Rahul Gandhi is the their only ticket and their best card,” Mehta said on a late night discussion on CNN-IBN.

“Now whether Rahul Gandhi can perform that miracle or not is another question, but this is a welcome clarity that has been brought into the party,” he added.

However the editor said it was unfortunate that the Congress leader had taken time to take up the new responsibility.

“Rahul Gandhi has not shown any appetite and enthusiasm for the job unfortunately,” he said.

Sudheendra Kulkarni from the BJP party, who was also present, criticised the Congress’ move as it promotes dynastic politics.

“The Congress party has come under the complete grip of the family. What we are seeing now is complete slavish attitude towards a party that is 127 years old. It has a glorious past but now all are hoping Rahul Gandhi will revive the party, which is not going to happen,” Kulkarni said.

Kulkarni also said that the ‘Gandhi’ surname would work against the Congress leader in elections.

“Young people of India today want to see performance. They will judge a person’s leadership qualities on the basis of his karma and not janm(birth),” he added.
