Arrested Guj-cop Sanjeev Bhatt granted bail

A local court in Ahmedabad today granted bail to suspended Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt. Bhatt was arrested on 30 September, 2011, for allegedly forcing a subordinate KD Pant to file a false affidavit against Gujarat Chief Minister (CM), Narendra Modi.

His arrest was made on the basis an affidavit by Pant, alleging that he was forced to stand as an alibi for the incidents that happened on the night on 27 February, 2002 at the CM’s residence, a day before the communal riots occurred in Gujarat.

Bhatt’s advocate Syed had contended that his client’s arrest was politically motivated.

He had argued that the arrest was also aimed at getting hold of and destroying the alleged evidence he had, against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi with regard to the 2002 communal riots.

The court, on 12 October, had reserved the order on bail plea of Bhatt till 17 October.

Pant in his FIR had alleged that Bhatt took him to meet state Congress  president Arjun Modhwadia at his residence. Modhwadia also assured him that there was no need to worry and he should do what Bhatt was asking.

The counsel for state said that the Bhatt’s association with opposition party, clearly showed his intentions and based on this, Bhatt filed an affidavit with false contents in the Supreme Court with the purpose to arraign Narendra Modi in an offence under Section 302 (murder) of Indian Penal Code.

The counsel also argued that Modi had nothing to do with the FIR against Bhatt.

Session Judge V K Vyas granted bail on the condition that Bhatt would cooperate with the investigation and would remain present when called for.
