He may find himself uncomfortably in the spotlight on account of accusations of sodomy, but for former Madhya Pradesh Finance Minister Raghavji, this is perhaps the first blemish on a politician who has served in Parliament and the Madhya Pradesh Assembly.
A lawyer and tax consultant, Raghavji Lakhamsi Savala, has been a veteran member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and joined the organisation way back in 1946. He began practising as a lawyer in 1958 and was elected an MLA from the Vidisha constituency in 1967.
Raghavji has served as a member of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on two occasions each. He served as a Lok Sabha MP between 1977-79 and then again between 1989-91. The veteran leader then served a term in the Rajya Sabha between 1991-92 and again between 1994-2000.
He also served in various ministerial committees during his term as an MP.
After a term in the capital, he returned to state politics again in 2003 and was elected as an MLA.
He has been the Finance Minister of the state since 2003, has delivered the state budget ten times and was also part of the Empowered Committee of the State Finance Minister that was to decide on the contentious Goods and Services Tax. Incidentally, Raghavji was strongly opposed to it.
