If Batman were from Chennai, he would arrive home late after performing his superhero duties, with a newspaper and a milk packet, to his father comparing him to one “Srinivasan’s son” who has a job in IT. Imagine a heavy tam-brahm accented uncle telling Batman, “I don’t know what you’re going to do with your life. Useless fellow.”
These are excerpts from a video doing the rounds of social media called ‘What If Batman Was From Chennai?’
So what if your favourite super hero was a middle-class boy from Chennai who had a uncle named Anant Padhmananban?
This Batman sits in the veranda of his home as his father dries his clothes, asking him why he insists on wearing black all the time, while Batman listens to a Tamil song with the lyrics, “Black only is my favorite colour!”
He goes to collect his ironed clothes from the neighborhood laundry to find it being delivered to him by a man wearing an Iron Man mask.
When Batman speaks in a typical heavy-bass voice, his father forces him to gargle with an ayurvedic potion. The family does a pooja of his bat-mobile, and his first assignment is dropping his father to the bank.
In a faux serious scene, Batman and Joker are seen sitting in a dingy room across one another. Batman asks, “Tell me what you want,” to which Joker replies, “It depends on what is given at this hour.” Soon after a waiter comes to the table and asks them in Tamil, “Kitchen closing time, saar, please tell your order.”
The video has been made by a Chennai-based production house called Culture Machine Media, and uploaded on their Youtube channel Put Chutney. The video has now gone viral on youtube and facebook and has close to 2 lakh views.
