Have you seen a flying canvas? Well, Air India Express’ Boeing 737 (VT-BWV) grabbed spotlight when it recently touched down at Mangaluru airport - its entire fuselage has been transformed into a vibrant celebration of Indian contemporary art, unlike any standard airline livery.
The full‑aircraft contemporary design has captured attention from aviation enthusiasts and art lovers alike.
A flying tribute to the Kochi‑Muziris Biennale
The aircraft’s eye‑catching artwork is inspired by the Kochi‑Muziris Biennale, India’s foremost international festival of contemporary art held in Kerala.
Rather than the usual static logo and colours, this special livery uses dynamic motifs and vibrant shapes to reflect the creativity and cultural diversity showcased at the Biennale, effectively turning the plane into a flying ambassador for Indian artistic expression.
The Biennale, held in Kochi, brings together artists from across the world and has become a key platform for contemporary art in South Asia.
By integrating this theme into an aircraft wrap, the carrier is highlighting the importance of India’s creative spirit and extending its reach beyond traditional galleries and event spaces.
An artwork by contemporary artist Osheen Siva
According to an airport spokesperson, the aircraft’s extraordinary exterior was designed by contemporary artist Osheen Siva, making it the first commercial airplane in India to be completely wrapped in artwork across its entire fuselage rather than just on the tail.
The initiative, called The Flying Canvas, is part of Air India Express’ broader “Tales of India” programme and celebrates Indian heritage and identity by turning the Boeing 737‑8 into a “moving cultural installation”.
