For Captain Indrani Singh sky is truly the limit. The first woman commercial pilot in Asia, she aptly describes herself as a ’natural flyer’, but this lady with wings has another side to her life — acute philanthropism.
Way back in 1996, the lady pilot had set up Literacy India, an NGO that allows under-privileged women to lead a sustainable livelihood through vocational training and also provides education to the poor.
“This was my personal mission. In 1996, I started off with five kids and today we have touched 25,000 women and children,” she said.
The project now runs in 22 centres across the country.
Singh’s NGO markets the handicrafts made by women in India and abroad. The seven-year old Indha project has succeeded in bringing accolades to the creators.
Her next project, Digital Dost, attempts to educate the younger generation on issues like AIDS and child abuse.
