News Wrap: Agni-V a success; Mumbai locals a failure

- India has entered the elite club of nations possessing an Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) after successfully test firing the nuclear capable Agni-V missile from the Wheeler Island off the Odisha Coast. With this, India becomes only the fifth country in the world with such technology.

Two commuters were killed today when they fell off an overcrowded Mumbai local train as the Central Railway’s suburban services continued to be disrupted by signal problems and delays—leading to chaos in the city.

Fifteen people travelling in other packed trains were also injured.

Millions of commuters have had a difficult time in the last two days after train services were curtailed following a fire in the main signal cabin at Kurla station. Kurla is a junction for people travelling on the central and harbour lines.

- Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who is visiting Washington this week for the semiannual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank will need to be prepared to hear complaints about his new retrospective tax proposals that have led foreign businesses to practically reconsider their investments in India. Mukherjee’s tax proposal is part of a budget package that is expected to be taken up by Parliament next month.

- Controversy over whether Ram Sethu is a national monument or not continues as the central government has chosen not to take any stand on the plea by Janta party president Subramanium Swamy that it be declared a national monument.

- Over to world news, and confessed mass killer Anders Breivik says he thought he only had a slim chance of escaping Norway’s capital alive after setting off a bomb in Oslo on 22nd July. Breivik told the court that he had estimated the chances of his survival at less than 5 percent.

- Over to sport and Chelsea stunned Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals. Didier Drogba’s goal at half-time was enough to secure victory for Roberto Di Matteo’s men. - Finally, Tech website TechCrunch has reported that Facebook is looking at 17th May as the date for its IPO. According to experts, the IPO could value the company between $80 billion and $100 billion.
