Let Anti-Corruption Bureau probe nullah cleaning work: Oppn

As lakhs of commuters bore the brunt of monsoon woes today, opposition leader in Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde sought a probe by ACB into the alleged nullah cleaning scam.

The rains caused water-logging in almost all low-lying areas of Mumbai and its suburbs including Kurla, Chembur, Tilak Nagar, Andheri, Parel, Lower Parel, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Dombivili.

“There’s a huge scam in pre-monsoon preparedness work including nullah cleaning works. The scam amounts to Rs 4,000 crore in last 10 years,” Munde said.

Where have the 150 crore spent on nullah cleanliness this year gone, Munde added.

Flight operations delayed by 30 mins, airport operational

Flight operations at the city airport were delayed by 30 minutes and three services had to be diverted due to incessant rain that has been lashing since late last evening.

“The airport is operational but the flights are delayed by 30 minutes,” a spokesperson for the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) said.

One flight each of Indigo and Jet Airways had to be diverted to Ahmedabad, while a Go Air flight had to be sent to Vadodara, she said.

The delays are due to “ATC congestion” as the rain has affected flight timings.

As for the visibility, the spokesperson said, it is at a comfortable 800-1,000 metres at present which can support flight operations.

A visibility of less than 500 metres can affect flight operations, she said.

The CSIA, which includes both the domestic as well as international terminals, is one of the busiest in the country as it serves the financial capital. – PTI

BMC has appealed to people not to leave houses. Heavy rain and deluge in Mumbai. An alert has issued for high tide at 2.30 pm. Incessant rains lashing Mumbai since last night disrupted normal life resulting in suspension of train services on the busy Central, Harbour and Western lines due to water-logging of tracks and in low-lying areas. Thousands of commuters, bound for offices and other work places, were caught unaware at suburban stations around the city as railways announced suspension of services. While Central line connects Mumbai CST to far-flung areas like Kasara, Badlapur, Ambernath etc., Harbour Line connects CST to Panvel. Western line starts from Churchgate and is recently extended up to Dahanu. In total, around 70-80 lakh people travel daily by local trains across all three lines, which are called as lifeline of the city. Railway sources said it is difficult to say by when the services would be resumed. The city has been battered by heavy rains since last night. Meanwhile, rain services on the Western line were also cancelled. The railways have advised commuters to avoid travel in view of the situation unless it is very urgent. “Suburban services are affected due to heavy rains and water-logging in several areas in Mumbai Central and Matunga. It is advised to all that commuters may travel only in case of emergency,” Western Railway stated in a release. On the city’s Western Railways, trains were operational only up to Andheri, according to reports. In light of the heavy rainfall, the BMC has requested schools to remain shut today.

From 8 am to 8 pm on Thursday, the city received 60.34 mm rainfall, while the eastern and western suburbs received 57.48 mm and 64.92 mm rainfall, respectively,  the Indian Express reports .
