Kudankulam protestors arrested en route to secretariat

A number of anti-Kudankulam protestors have been arrested in Chennai en route to the secretariat.

The protestors will be kept in custody till evening and then will be let off.

A massive showdown between the Tamil Nadu government and anti-Kudankualm protesters was inevitable, with over 4,000 protesters gathering near the Secretariat in Chennai to demonstrate against the India visit of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The protesters, sporting black flags are protesting the visit of IAEA inspectors, invited by the Centre, to the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station near Kota. The team will submit a report on the safety measure undertaken by the plant, reported CNN-IBN.

Meanwhile Times Now reported that police had been detaining protestors by the hundreds, and were lodging them in marriage halls and other large public spaces. A number of Tamil Nadu politicians including Vaiko are also courting arrest.

Political party cadre of the CPI, MDMK, DMK and PMK joined the People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) to protest against the government's indifference to the year long protest against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant at Idinthakarai.

The protesters have three demands — they want the government to shutdown the nuclear plant, they want all cases registered against PMANE to be withdrawn and Section 144 imposed at Idinthakarai to be withdrawn, reported Times Now.

However, the Tamil Nadu government is firm on its decision to go ahead with commissioning of the plant and is unlikely to change its mind.

Tamil Nadu has been going through a massive power crisis and Chief Minister has said time and again that the nuclear plant will improve the power situation in the State

Activists have cited the Fukushima disaster in Japan, triggered by a tsunami last year, to draw parallels about the dangers of a nuclear plant.
