The Indian government has confirmed a GPS-spoofing incident near the national capital that disrupted navigation systems around Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.

Aviation officials said that multiple flights experienced GPS/GNSS interference, forcing pilots to switch to alternative landing methods after their navigation data was compromised—a development that has triggered serious concerns over flight safety and the security of Indian airspace.

What really happened at the Delhi airport?

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport dealt with something straight out of a techno-thriller on November 8. It was a GPS spoofing attack that messed with aircraft navigation and forced multiple flights to divert.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

It’s the first time something like this has been reported so close to the national capital, and it caused far more confusion than anyone would like near one of India’s busiest airports.

Aircraft approaching Delhi started picking up fake GPS signals—essentially bogus satellite data that tricks onboard systems into calculating the wrong position. For pilots coming in to land, that’s a nightmare scenario. Suddenly, their navigation screens weren’t matching reality, and several incoming flights had to abandon their approaches altogether.

The timing couldn’t have been worse. IGIA’s main runway, 10/28, was under a major upgrade, meaning the airport’s usual Instrument Landing System was offline. Because of that, airlines were relying more heavily on GPS-based procedures. And when the spoofing kicked in, that dependence became a liability. A bunch of flights—including from IndiGo and Air India—ended up being diverted to Jaipur because the navigation readings just couldn’t be trusted.

What made the situation even trickier is how wide the spoofing zone seemed to be. Reports say the fake signals were affecting aircraft up to 60 nautical miles away from Delhi. Given that the airport handles more than 1,500 flight movements a day, the ripple effect was immediate with delays, congestion, and a whole lot of air-traffic juggling.
