A 33-year-old Bengaluru techie named Gokul was arrested on Sunday over his alleged involvement in hoax calls made to Bengaluru International Airport, which resulted in six flights being delayed or recalled, according CNN IBN.
Reports say the accused made the threat calls to the airport to implicate the husband of a lady friend. Gokul allegedly harboured romantic feelings for the woman. According Bengaluru Police Chief NS Meghrikh, the man has given his confession statement.
Gokul had purchased a SIM card on the name of his friend’s husband and had even provided his voter ID card, procured during a visit to the married couple’s apartment, to the shop for identification, the CNN IBN report said.
The report said Gokul and the married couple lived in the same apartment block.
The accused then placed threat calls to Bengaluru International Airport, targeting three flights from Bengaluru and three from New Delhi, hoping the police would trace the SIM to the husband as it was purchased under his name and thus, would clear Gokul’s way to approach the woman.
The police traced the the call to Gokul’s apartment and arrested him following suspicion.
Further questioning and investigation has revealed that Gokul might also be involved in the murder of his wife, who died two months back under suspicious circumstances. At the time, the initial inquiry did not reveal any foul play, but now after repeated questioning, Gokul has given details of his wife’s death and there are specific clues that lead to his involvement, CNN IBN report said.
“He accepted that he assaulted his wife which resulted in her death,” CNN IBN quoted police chief Megharikh as saying.
The man will be facing a separate murder charge, apart from the charges he will face under Civil Aviation Act for making the threat calls.
Investigation has also revealed that Gokul had in past created a fake social media account in name of his lady friend’s husband and followed pages related to terror group Islamic State, hoping the Cyber Crime Cell would nab him.
When that plan did not work out, Gokul then bough the SIM and made threat calls to the airport.
