Disappointed with girlfriend's behaviour, Mumbai youth sets himself ablaze on a video call

Mumbai: A teenager allegedly set himself on fire while being on a video call with girlfriend following an altercation in suburban Santacruz here, police said on Tuesday.

As per cops, the incident occurred late Monday night, when Sagar Parshuram Jadhav (19) was on a video call with his girlfriend who was returning from visiting Ganpati Pandal.

The argument reportedly began with his girlfriend taking a particular road opposed by Jadhav, police said.

In a fit of rage, the man threatened to set himself on fire and when he acted on his threat, his cotton shirt caught fire, the official said.

Jadhav’s family members who were at home rushed to douse the flames and took him to a hospital, he said.

The victim sustained 30 per cent burns. He has been getting treatment at a hospital, an official from Vakola police station said.

The police have recorded the man’s statement, in which he has said that no one should be held responsible for his extreme step, the official said, adding that further investigation is under way.
