Twenty-one-year old Rahul Kumar, a resident of Janta Colony in New Delhi was on Tuesday arrested for mercilessly assaulting a stray dog and then posting the video of this ghastly act on Facebook.
The video captures him initially cuddling a stray dog and later, torturing it by whirling it around holding one of its legs and throwing it at a parked car.
Once the video went viral, a Delhi-based activist wrote to police commissioner BS Bassi demanding action against the man who uploaded a video of himself whirling a street dog around before flinging the animal against a car.
Here’s the video of the brutal attack:
Activist Saurabh Gupta then traced him through his Facebook profile.
“I had immediately saved the video and took screenshots of his Facebook profile. I knew he will deactivate his account if he gets noticed. I had, therefore, started contacting his friends, who had liked that video,” Gupta was quoted as saying by Times of India.
One of his friends, who had made the video, gave his number and address. He told Gupta that they were cricket buddies.
Rahul reportedly switched off his mobile phone to escape arrest. Gupta then reached Vivek Vihar police station with all the video grabs, his Facebook profile, address and other important details.
A Hindustan Times report also says that lawyer and columnist Shehzad Poonawalla too began an online campaign to shame the man. The campaign was aided by the NGO Policy Samvad. In his campaign Poonawala highlights how the act captured in the video constitutes an offence under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960.
