The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may have won a landslide victory in Delhi assembly elections, but the margin of victory is just 2 per cent.

As per the latest figures with CNN News-18, the BJP has a vote-share of 45 per cent against 43 per cent of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

However, the gap of 2 per cent has translated into 26 more seats for the BJP.

As per the latest trends as of 3:30 pm, the BJP is on its way to win 48 seats by reducing AAP to a distant second with just 22 seats.

It is not rare in Indian politics to have a large vote share but few seats as India follows first-past-the-post (FPPS) system where the candidate with more vote wins and a party’s tally is made by candidates who win this way and not by its share of the votes cast. On the other hand, in countries with proportional representation (PR) such as Israel the party gets seat based on the share of votes cast.

If the Delhi assembly elections were to be held as per the PR system, the margin of BJP’s victory would have been much less.

In the 2025 Delhi assembly elections, the BJP did not just win but defeated some of the BJP's tallest leaders, such as former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia.
