The Bharatiya Janata Party has made a remarkable comeback in Delhi after a 27-year-long exile, ending Aam Aadmi Party’s juggernaut in the national capital.

The Narendra Modi-led party has won 48 out of 70 assembly seats while AAP managed to secure 22 seats. The party lost key constituencies like New Delhi, Greater Kailash and Jangpura to BJP. However, the silver lining was that the outgoing Chief Minister Atishi emerged victorious from her Kalkaji seat, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed party workers at the BJP headquarters in Delhi today, hailing party’s victory and saying that the national capital has become ‘AAP-DA free from now.’ Meanwhile, Kejriwal has conceded defeat and congratulated AAP’s rival BJP for winning the elections.

Congress was not able to win a single seat in the city, a loss that was acknowledged by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.

Delhi election results: Is Atishi now AAP’s numero uno as Kejriwal, Sisodia suffer defeat?

As Arvind Kejriwal lost his seat in New Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party lost Delhi. AAP’s loss does not just end here. The party’s overall performance in the national capital was such that it paved the way for BJP’s resurgence after 27 years.  Apart from failing to cross the majority mark of 36 seats, the party’s key candidates like Manish Sisodia and Saurabh Bharadwaj lost from their respective seats.

Amid all the bleakness, however, Delhi’s outgoing chief minister Atishi has risen to the occasion after winning her assembly seat in Kalkaji. She is the only leader in her party’s clique to have emerged victorious.

Delhi Elections: Why BJP will look to do better with its 2025 win than its 1993-1998 term

BJP is on its path to forming the government in Delhi for the second time since 1998. The party is leading in 48 out of 70 seats, well ahead of the magic mark of 36. These numbers are a testament to BJP’s resurgence in the city which it once ruled 27 years ago.

The story of BJP’s only term in Delhi, however, is not a pleasant one. Marred by an onion crisis and internal rifts, the party’s track record in governing the national capital from 1993 to 1998 eventually led to its fall, a damage that could not be undone for the next 27 years.

"Was saying for long time...AAP didn't understand": Anna Hazare on Delhi election results

As the current trends show Bharatiya Janata Party poised to get majority in Delhi assembly elections, social activist Anna Hazare criticised Arvind Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party for their alleged involvement in controversies surrounding liquor and money.

Hazare said he was talking for long time about the importance of “character” of political candidates, but AAP didn’t understood and that’s why their support was reduced.

Speaking with the reporters, Hazare said, “I have been saying for a long time that while contesting the election – the candidate must have a character, good ideas and have no dent on image. But, they (AAP) didn’t get that. They got tangled in liquor and money – his (Arvind Kejriwal) image was dented because of it and that’s why they are getting fewer votes in the election.”

Why the win in Delhi is important for Modi’s BJP

Anything is possible in politics and that’s what we are seeing in the country’s capital — Delhi. The Narendra Modi-led BJP is on course to break its 27-year drought, crossing the required 36-seat majority mark in the polls.

With this win, the BJP has trounced Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP, which has been in power for three consecutive years. It first came to power in Delhi in 2013, winning 28 seats, but the government lasted just 49 days. In the 2015 elections, the party won a record 67 seats. In the 2020 polls, the AAP won 62 seats.

Authorities have increased security measures as the vote counting process for the 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly is scheduled to begin on Saturday.

Visuals showed security personnel deployed outside various counting centers in Delhi.

Meanwhile, exit polls have predicted a comfortable victory for the BJP in the polls, with AAP falling behind and Congress continuing its dismal performance. However, AAP leaders have stated that exit polls have always underestimated the party’s seat count, and they expressed confidence in the party’s return to power.

Key constituencies include New Delhi, where AAP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is contesting against Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit and Parvesh Verma of the BJP. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi is facing BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress candidate Alka Lamba.

The campaign saw sharp exchanges between leaders of the three parties.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, on Friday, refuted claims made by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal, who alleged that the Election Commission (EC) had not provided booth-wise voting data for the assembly constituencies. The poll body clarified that the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, had been “complied with in letter and spirit” at every polling station.

“As per Rule 49S of the Conduct of Election Rules 1961, all the Presiding Officer had furnished the account of votes recorded in Form 17C to every Polling Agent present at the polling station on the day of poll, February 5, 2025,” Delhi CEO’s office posted on X.

On Friday, Kejriwal alleged that the Election Commission has refused to upload Form 17C, which gives booth-wise the total number of votes polled in each assembly election.

“EC has refused to upload form 17C and the number of votes polled per booth in each assembly despite several requests. Aam Aadmi Party has made a website, where we have uploaded all the form 17C of every assembly,” Kejriwal said in a post on X.

The Rule 49S part (1) of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961 states, “The presiding officer shall at the close of the poll prepare an account of votes recorded in Form 17C and enclose it in a separate cover with the words ‘Account of votes recorded’ superscribed thereon.

The second part of Rule 49S states that the presiding officer shall provide a copy of Form 17C to every polling agent.

“The presiding officer shall furnish every polling agent present at the close of the poll a true copy of the entries made in Form 17C after obtaining a receipt from the said polling agent therefor and shall attest it as a true copy,” part (2) of Rule 49S of Conduct of Election rules states.
