Mylab to make one cr COVID home test kits before national rollout on 1 June

Mylab Discovery Solutions, which has developed a do-it-yourself COVID-19 testing kit for symptomatic patients, is building a stock of one crore units of the recently-approved home test kits before a national rollout on June 1, a top official said on Friday.

The Pune-based company, which is also credited with making the first indigeneous RT-PCR kit last year, is developing an integrated molecular testing product which focused on automation, as its next big project, the official said.

Inoculation for 18-44 group in Delhi may be temporarily halted from Monday: AAP

The Delhi government will have to temporarily stop the inoculation drive for the 18-44 age group from Monday, as it has almost run out of vaccines for this category, AAP MLA Atishi said on Friday. She said that Delhi has already shut 235 of the total 368 inoculation centres for this age group due to a shortage of vaccines. 

“The remaining 133 sites will be shut on Saturday, which means the inoculation drive for this age group will have to be stopped temporarily from Monday,” she added. Only 42,380 doses were left for the 18-44 category as on Friday morning, Atishi said.

Four people die of black fungus in MP’s Damoh, Balaghat

Four people from Damoh and Balaghat districts in Madhya Pradesh have died of Mucormycosis, a dangerous fungal infection seen in some COVID-19 patients and those who had recovered, even as the state grapples with a shortage of injections for its treatment, officials said on Friday.

Deepak Soni (39) and Nitin Jain (30), both from Damoh, died of the infection, also called black fungus, on Thursday, after recovering from COVID-19, while Sheshram Kuchalahi (38) and Chinu Lalwani (42), the other two deceased, hail from Balaghat, officials said

“Soni died in a hospital in Nagpur, Jain died in Damoh. Four other patients of Mucormycosis have been sent to Bhopal for treatment,” Damoh ENT specialist Vishal Shukla told PTI.

SC says HCs must refrain from passing unimplementable directions

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed order of Allahabad High Court in which it said that entire medical system in villages and small cities of Uttar Pradesh is at God’s mercy ("Ram bharose") amid the COVID-19 pandemic. 

A vacation bench of Justices Vineet Saran and BR Gavai said that the directions of High Court passed on 17 May shall not be treated as directives but an advice to Uttar Pradesh government. It said that High Courts should refrain themselves from passing directions which cannot be implemented.

Assam govt issues guidelines to curb rise in black fungus cases

Days after a COVID-19 recovered patient died of mucormycosis or black fungus at a hospital, the Assam Health and Family Welfare Department on Friday released a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to contain the possible spread of the disease.

The order issued by the principal secretary to the Assam governments Health Department said, a large number of similar cases have been reported from other parts of the country, and there is a likelihood of an increase in the number of such cases in the future.

“In order to screen, diagnose and manage such cases of black fungus in COVID patients, the Standard Operating Procedure is notified with immediate effect,” it said.

Thailand reports its first case of Indian COVID-19 variant 

Thailand on Friday said it has detected its first locally transmitted cases of the B.1.617 coronavirus variant, first emerged in India, as it announced the formal rollout of its national vaccination plan next month.

The Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration said 15 cases of the coronavirus variant were found in a camp for construction workers in Bangkok. CCSA spokesperson Taweesilp Visanuyotin said all 15 were sent to a hospital and isolated.

The government has banned the arrival of any non-Thais from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal in an effort to prevent the spread of the variant.

Goa govt to form task force, experts’ panel for COVID-19 third wave

A 15-member special task force and an experts’ committee will be formed in Goa to tackle a possible third wave of coronavirus infections in the state, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Friday. 

While the STF will comprise the CM as the chairperson, the state health minister Vishwajit Rane will be the vice-chairperson and other members would include doctors from the state-run and private sectors, Sawant informed.

“The experts’ committee will be headed by Goa Medical College and Hospital Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar and it will take a call periodically on amending COVID-19 protocols. Both committees will have pediatricians as the third wave may reportedly affect children. We have also decided to set up a 60-bed special Intensive Care Unit for children in the Super Specialty Block of GMCH,” the chief minister said.

Karnataka receives sixth Oxygen Express

 Karnataka on Friday received the sixth Oxygen Express from Kanalus in Jamnagar in Gujarat carrying 72.94 metric tonnes of Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) in four cryogenic containers for COVID patients in the state.

According to the Chief Public Relation Officer of South Western Railway Aneesh Hegde, the Oxygen Express reached ICD Whitefield in Bengaluru in the morning.

“A signal free ‘Green Corridor’ was created by the Railways to enable swift transport of this Oxygen Express, i.e. this train has run stoppage free, and has not had to wait for crossing/passage of another train,” Hegde said.

Rapid antigen tests to be done at all CHCs, PHCs in Uttarakhand

With the second wave of the coronavirus spreading fast in rural areas of Uttarakhand, the state government on Friday decided to conduct Rapid Antigen Tests at all community health centres and primary health centres.

The chief medical officers of all districts have been asked to make arrangements for conducting the tests at all the CHCs and PHCs in their areas. 

Making Rapid Antigen Tests available to people at all CHCs and PHCs is a must for the early treatment of those infected with the virus at all levels, the order issued by Health Secretary Pankaj Kumar Pandey said.

Delhi’s daily cases remain below 4,000 for third straight day

Tamil Nadu records 35,579 new cases, 397 deaths; highest single-day toll 

Tamil Nadu Friday registered 35,579 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, the highest single-day spike recorded so far. Of the new cases, 6,073 were reported in Chennai alone.

With the death of 397 more patients, the COVID-19 toll in the state is over 19,000. The 35,579 new cases and 397 deaths pushed the tally to 17.3 lakh when the cumulative toll reached 19,131.

Odisha records single-day spike of 12,523 cases, record 27 deaths

Odisha on Friday reported the highest single-day spike of 12,523 new COVID-19 cases and a record 27 more deaths, a Health Department official said.

The new cases were recorded after testing 61,665 samples on Thursday, taking the positivity rate to 20.30 percent.

The state has so far reported 6,68,422 cases of COVID-19 and 2,430 deaths. Of the new infections, 7,012 were detected at different quarantine centres and the remaining 5,511 were local contact cases.

Daily caseload drops in Karnataka as state reports 28,869 cases

The daily COVID-19 cases in Karnataka is witnessing a decline as the state registered 28,869 new infections, which was outnumbered by recoveries with 52,257 discharges. However the number of fatalities continued to remain high at 548, the health department said on Thursday. While the total caseload was 23.35 lakh, the toll stood at 23,854.

Out of the 28,869 new cases reported on Thursday, 9,409 were from Bengaluru Urban alone, and the city saw 25,776 discharges. As of 20 May, cumulatively 23,35,524 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 23,854 deaths and 17,76,695 discharges, the department said in its bulletin.

Total number of active cases in the state stood at 5,34,954. While the positivity rate for the day stood at 23.91 percent, case fatality rate (CFR) was at 1.89 percent.

The Gujarat government on Thursday extended night curfew in 36 cities of the state till 28 May to stop the spread of coronavirus infections. However, daytime restrictions were relaxed and shops, shopping malls, business establishments and other business activities were allowed between 9 am to 3 pm.

West Bengal reports highest single-day COVID-19 toll at 162

West Bengal’s COVDID-19 toll climbed to 13,895 on Thursday after record 162 fatalities were reported, the health department said in a bulletin. It said that 19,091 fresh cases of infection took the overall count to 12,09,958.

In the past 24 hours, 18,910 people recovered from the viral infection in the state, improving the discharge rate slightly to 87.98 percent. So far, 10,64,553 patients have been cured.
