On February 15 in Colombo, when Pakistan face India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, one name could quietly change the game - Usman Tariq.
He is not yet a big star. He has not played hundreds of matches. But in just four T20 Internationals, he has taken 11 wickets. His economy rate is under six and his average is under eight. These are not normal numbers. These are numbers of a bowler who can turn a match in a few overs.

Pakistan captain Salman Agha has already called the 28-year-old a “trump card”. And against India, Tariq could be Pakistan’s biggest surprise. “We wanted to give Tariq a game,” Agha had said at Pakistan’s last fixture against the USA. “I think he’s a match-winner and a trump card for us, so we want to use him.”
A life away from cricket
The story of Usman Tariq is not simple. It is not the usual story of a boy who played cricket every day and rose quickly. In fact, he once left cricket completely.
Born in Nowshera district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan, Tariq moved to the United Arab Emirates at a very young age. He worked as a salesman for a purchasing company. Cricket was no longer his focus, and life was just about earning money and surviving.
But sometimes, one moment can change everything. After watching the film M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, based on the life of former India captain MS Dhoni, Tariq felt inspired and decided to take up the sport again. He left Dubai and returned to Pakistan to pursue his childhood dream.
A friend introduced him to Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman, who helped him connect with coaches in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Later, former Pakistan cricketer Wajahatullah Wasti guided him. Slowly, Tariq was able to rebuild his cricketing career.

From PSL to international stage
In December 2023, he was picked by Quetta Gladiators for the Pakistan Super League. It was a big break for him. He went on to play in other leagues around the world and money was no longer a problem.
Then in 2025, he played for Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League. He finished with 20 wickets and helped them win the title. This helped him earn a national call-up for a series against South Africa.
On his international debut, he took 2/26. Soon after, he took a hat-trick against Zimbabwe in a tri-series and was named Player of the Match. Once a slaemsan, he was now turning into a serial match-winner for Pakistan.
The pause that troubles batters
Tariq is a right-arm off-spinner. But what makes him different is not just spin. He has a visible pause in his run-up. He almost stops before delivering the ball. This stop-start action disturbs the batter’s rhythm.
In modern T20 cricket, batters depend on timing and quick decisions. When a bowler changes the timing, even slightly, it creates confusion. That confusion leads to half-shots. And half-shots lead to wickets.
Against India, this could be very important. India’s batting line-up has many left-handers. On paper, off-spin turning away from left-handers can create edges and mistakes. Tariq’s unusual rhythm can make it even more difficult.
Tariq’s bowling action has also brought attention. Many people have questioned it. He was reported for a suspect action in the PSL but was later cleared.
“ICC has tested him and cleared him twice, I don’t know that the fuss is all about. Anyway, he doesn’t get bothered much with all this because ever since he started playing people would talk about his action, so he is used to it,” Salman Agha said before the India game.
Still, there were jokes. Fans call him a “chucker” on social media, and many believe that he should be banned from bowling. However, this has not stopped Tariq from doing what he does best.
A wild card for Pak in Colombo?
India vs Pakistan matches are never normal games. They carry high pressure, emotion and a long history. In such matches, one unexpected spell can decide everything.
Earlier, Tariq had said that his dream was to help Pakistan defeat India single-handedly in a big match.
Tariq may not be the biggest name on the Pakistani team sheet yet, but he could be that game-changer against India.
