The Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction will be getting underway less than 24 hours from now, with Rishabh Pant, Arshdeep Singh, Jos Buttler and several other top names set to go under the hammer in Saudi Arabia starting Sunday. The world’s biggest T20 league had earlier set the retention deadline for franchises on 31 October, with teams such as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) filling all six slots and leaving no room for Right To Match (RTM) retentions.

There were others such as Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who opted for a near-complete overhaul by retaining two and three players respectively, entering the upcoming auction with the largest purses as a result.
Mega auctions are a way of ensuring a constant rotation of players among franchises and to prevent individuals – other than those who are part of a team’s core group – from staying at a franchise for too long. The upcoming mega auction will be the fifth in the league’s history, with the previous ones having taken place in 2011, 2014, 2018 and 2022.
