Prasidh: I’ve been striving to do this for quite some time now, and I’m happy it came off today. Nothing different to be honest, I was still looking to hit the good areas. West Indies bowled really well, and when I went out to bat, it was still seaming around, and I wanted to make the most of it. I’d seen the wicket last game as well, trying too many things wasn’t what I had originally planned. Just tried to keep it simple. Be as consistent as possible. Try and get as consistent. Bowl the straighter lengths and trouble the batsmen.

Rohit Sharma, captain: Obviously winning the series is a good feeling. There were some challenges that we had to face today when we started batting, but lot of maturity in the partnership between KL and Surya. That’s what we want. We got to a respectable total towards the end. It was important to get to a good score, and then with the ball we were outstanding. The bowlers came together and bowled as a unit. I think it’s important for these guys to bat in those kind of situations. That’s when you can judge their characters. Credit to Surya. The pitch wasn’t easy where you can start playing your shots right away. Credit to KL as well. Not easy batting up and down the order. Good job by Hooda too. I’ve been asked to do some different things, and this was different, so people will be happy. But this was for just one game. We’re going to get Shikhar back in the next game. Not looking too much into the result. We don’t mind losing a game here and there as we’re looking at the long term. There’s a day in between, we’re going to sit and talk about what we can do for the final game. There are only a few guys in the squad who have been playing consistently. I was a little surprised to not see any dew today, but that doesn’t take anything away from the attack.

Nicholas Pooran, West Indies captain: Definitely with the bat. We couldn’t build the partnerships. 39th over was very crucial for us with Fabian and Hosein out there. Hopefully it helps us as batsmen. He’s a tough guy, a big guy, and he’ll be one. Obviously special, he’s a strong guy. The more games he plays, the more experience he gets, the better. We did a really good job when we bowled to them.

OUT! Sundar wins the battle against Smith, bringing the big-hitting Jamaican’s entertaining cameo to an end after he skies the ball towards deep midwicket. The ball nearly disappeared in the night sky, that’s how high it was, but Kohli still managed to get under it and complete a fine catch in the end. WI 193/9

Siraj’s concedes a couple of wides along with as many singles, before Smith pulls in front of square off a full toss, beating Rahul running to his left from deep midwicket, to collect his first boundary of the innings. A third wide conceded by Siraj off the fifth. Smith collects a double off the last ball, skieing the ball towards deep extra cover where it lands safely beyond Krishna’s reach. 11 from the over, leaving Windies 48 off 36 with two wickets left. Smith’s certainly looking ominous for the hosts right now.

Chahal into his final over. Smith collects a single off the first delivery. Joseph’s surprised by a delivery that could be described as something of a ‘spitting cobra’, turning and bouncing sharply to beat Joseph in the third ball. Single each to Joseph and Smith in the next two balls followed by a dot. Three from the over, as Chahal signs off with 1/45 from his quota. Windies need another 59 to win from 42.

Prasidh Krishna’s brought back for what should be his final burst, unless Rohit decides to save his final over for the fag end, and the seamer does well to keep Smith and Joseph quiet in this over, with just two singles coming off it. Windies need 62 off 48 — quite gettable the way Smith’s striking the ball right now. For the Indians, it’s just a matter of two good balls.

Chahal replaces Siraj, and does well to keep Smith quiet at a time when the Jamaican is looking to smash just about anything and everything that comes his way. Three singles are all that he allows Smith and Alzarri Joseph to add to the scoreboard. Windies need 64 off 54.

Thakur gets rid of a well-set Hosein in th second delivery with a sharp bouncer. Hard-hitting all-rounder Odean Smith though, announces himself by tonking back-to-back sixes off the all-rounder in the fourth and fifth deliveries, his clean hitting eliciting a smile from the opposition captain. 12 runs and a wicket in the final over of the second powerplay. West Indies need another 67 off 60 with two wickets in hand.

OUT! And now Hosein departs in the very next over, getting cramped for room by a short-of-length delivery and getting a deflection off his glove, with Pant running forward and completing a fine catch. India are just two wickets away from clinching the series now! WI 159/8

Chance goes begging in the third delivery after a miscued slog by Hosein, with Sundar unable to hold on to the ball after running backwards from mid on, allowing the batter to collect a brace. Single to Hosein off the fourth. Allen perishes in the fifth, nicking a short ball to the keeper, as Siraj breaks the solid-looking seventh-wicket stand. Three runs and a wicket from the over. WI need 79 off 66 with three wickets in hand.

FOUR! Hosein’s offered a hint of width by Hooda, and he goes for the drive through the extra cover region. Two fielders converge in the deep, but are unable to prevent the boundary. OUT! Maiden international wicket for Deepak Hooda as he gets rid of the dangerman Brooks, who departs for 44 and was looking to bring up his fifty with a big hit down the ground. Except he hardly got any timing on the shot, and is caught in front of the boundary rope. Brooks’ exit makes it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for Windies to chase the target down from here. As long as Brooks is able to preserve his wicket, and gets the required support from Hosein and the rest of the batting order, West Indies might just have a chance of emerging winners today.

FOUR! Another boundary for Brooks as he pulls a short ball towards the square leg fence off the fourth delivery. Chahal removes Hope in the second delivery, the opener looking to break the shackles with a big hit only to get caught by SKY at long on. Drinks called on the field after the dismissal, and skipper Nicholas Pooran is off to a dream start on the other side of the drinks break as he gets off the mark with a monster hit over deep midwicket in the free hit after a front-foot no ball by Chahal in the third ball. West Indies were off to a positive start in the chase, but suddenly find themselves in a bit of trouble at the end of the first powerplay.

Siraj bowls a jaffa to Hope in the third delivery, getting the ball to rear up after pitching along good length while angling in, beating the batter’s defence completely. Hope pushes the ball towards mid off next ball, collecting an easy single on offer. Loud appeal for LBW in the fifth, with umpire Virender Sharma ruling it not out. Now Shai Hope gets going in this over, collecting a boundary off the first ball as he tickles the ball going down leg past the keeper. Dot off each of the first two balls, before King punches a short-of-length ball through point, beating the fielder diving to his left to collect a brace. King absolutely smokes the ball straight down the ground in the last delivery, striking this from the meat of his bat to send the ball all the way to the sight screen for the first six of the innings. Some shoddy fielding allows Chahal to come back for a second run two balls later. Chahal collects a single off the fourth, leaving Krishna to face the last two deliveries. Bye off the fifth as Krishna sets off for the other end after missing the ball completely. Chahal is the next man in, and is nearly run out while looking to get off the mark with a single right away. Appeal for LBW against Chahal in the last ball, with the Windies going for a review after a bit of consideration. DD: The pitch has moved a little left of the square, but the dimensions have not changed. This looks like a better pitch to bat on, more grass covering.

AA: It certainly looks a bit different. We saw a few grains on the pitch in the last game. This looks a lot better a pitch. This is going to play well. Won’t be a surprise if the team winning the toss goes on to chase.

Ahmedabad franchise team name unveiled!

Gujarat Titans — that is what the Ahmedabad franchise will be called. The official announcement is made minutes before toss in the second ODI.

“We chose the name based on a lot of research. What we wanted to do was to represent the true spirit of Gujarat,” says CVC official Siddharth Patel.

“It’s pretty amazing to be honest. Loved the name. What it means to me is a lot. I’m very grateful for the opportunity given by Ashi pa, Siddharth and CVC because this will be a great opportunity for me,” says captain Hardik Pandya.

Dhawan, Iyer return to training

A couple of familiar faces were back in training ahead of the second ODI, with Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer hitting the nets after recovering from COVID-19. Will the duo be automatically drafted back into the XI today?

Captaincy has come to Rohit at perhaps the most opportune time in his career. He is peaking as a batsman across formats, and Kohli is an ever-present example of how an in-form captain can help mould the team in his image. It has been just one game, so it is indeed too early to judge.

Focus will be on vice-captain KL Rahul’s batting position on his return from a short break as a buoyant India aim for another demolition act against the West Indies in the second ODI to seal the three-match series in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

The India spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar ran riot as they shot out West Indies for a meagre 176 and then skipper Rohit Sharma bossed the chase with a blistering 60, as the hosts recorded an easy six-wicket win in the lung-opener at the Motera.

Infused with new energy under Rohit, India looked a completely overhauled unit after being whitewashed in South Africa and the team would certainly want to continue from where they left of on Sunday night.

The biggest positive for India is that Rohit, who had missed the South Africa series due to a hamstring injury, was in brilliant form on comeback.
