That brings us to the end of our coverage of the second one-dayer, with Team India bringing smiles back on the faces of their fans with their first series win of 2022, after a disappointing start to the year in South Africa. West Indies will eye valuable ODI Super League points on Friday though, the final game by no means a dead rubber. India though, will be getting Dhawan back at the top of the batting order, and might be tempted to make a couple of other changes too.

For now, this is Amit signing off. Good night!

04:06 PM (IST)

Prasidh: I’ve been striving to do this for quite some time now, and I’m happy it came off today. Nothing different to be honest, I was still looking to hit the good areas. West Indies bowled really well, and when I went out to bat, it was still seaming around, and I wanted to make the most of it. I’d seen the wicket last game as well, trying too many things wasn’t what I had originally planned. Just tried to keep it simple. Be as consistent as possible. Try and get as consistent. Bowl the straighter lengths and trouble the batsmen.

04:06 PM (IST)

Prasidh Krishna is the Player of the Match for his outstanding figures of 9-3-12-4

04:06 PM (IST)

Rohit Sharma, captain: Obviously winning the series is a good feeling. There were some challenges that we had to face today when we started batting, but lot of maturity in the partnership between KL and Surya. That’s what we want. We got to a respectable total towards the end. It was important to get to a good score, and then with the ball we were outstanding. The bowlers came together and bowled as a unit. I think it’s important for these guys to bat in those kind of situations. That’s when you can judge their characters. Credit to Surya. The pitch wasn’t easy where you can start playing your shots right away. Credit to KL as well. Not easy batting up and down the order. Good job by Hooda too. I’ve been asked to do some different things, and this was different, so people will be happy. But this was for just one game. We’re going to get Shikhar back in the next game. Not looking too much into the result. We don’t mind losing a game here and there as we’re looking at the long term. There’s a day in between, we’re going to sit and talk about what we can do for the final game. There are only a few guys in the squad who have been playing consistently. I was a little surprised to not see any dew today, but that doesn’t take anything away from the attack.

04:06 PM (IST)

Nicholas Pooran, West Indies captain: Definitely with the bat. We couldn’t build the partnerships. 39th over was very crucial for us with Fabian and Hosein out there. Hopefully it helps us as batsmen. He’s a tough guy, a big guy, and he’ll be one. Obviously special, he’s a strong guy. The more games he plays, the more experience he gets, the better. We did a really good job when we bowled to them.

Food for thought for the Indian team management?

OUT! Prasidh Krishna grabs the remaining wicket to finish with superb, match-winning figures of 9-3-12-4, as India clinch the three-ODI series with a match to spare with a 44-run win! Roach is the last batter to depart, getting trapped leg-before with umpire Nitin Menon raising his finger right away. HawkEye shows the ball would’ve crashed into the leg stump. After 45 overs,West Indies 193/9 ( Alzarri Joseph 7 , Kemar Roach 0)

Sundar gives away just three runs from the first five deliveries at a time when West Indian tail enders are looking to go for the kill, and the pressure gets the better of Smith in the end and he ends up skieing the ball towards deep midwicket, where Kohli takes a fine catch. India are one wicket away from sealing the series now!

04:06 PM (IST)

OUT! Sundar wins the battle against Smith, bringing the big-hitting Jamaican’s entertaining cameo to an end after he skies the ball towards deep midwicket. The ball nearly disappeared in the night sky, that’s how high it was, but Kohli still managed to get under it and complete a fine catch in the end. WI 193/9

After 44 overs,West Indies 190/8 ( Odean Smith 23 , Alzarri Joseph 5)

Siraj’s concedes a couple of wides along with as many singles, before Smith pulls in front of square off a full toss, beating Rahul running to his left from deep midwicket, to collect his first boundary of the innings. A third wide conceded by Siraj off the fifth. Smith collects a double off the last ball, skieing the ball towards deep extra cover where it lands safely beyond Krishna’s reach. 11 from the over, leaving Windies 48 off 36 with two wickets left. Smith’s certainly looking ominous for the hosts right now.

04:06 PM (IST)

After 43 overs,West Indies 179/8 ( Odean Smith 16 , Alzarri Joseph 4)

Chahal into his final over. Smith collects a single off the first delivery. Joseph’s surprised by a delivery that could be described as something of a ‘spitting cobra’, turning and bouncing sharply to beat Joseph in the third ball. Single each to Joseph and Smith in the next two balls followed by a dot. Three from the over, as Chahal signs off with 1/45 from his quota. Windies need another 59 to win from 42.

04:06 PM (IST)

After 42 overs,West Indies 176/8 ( Odean Smith 14 , Alzarri Joseph 3)

Prasidh Krishna’s brought back for what should be his final burst, unless Rohit decides to save his final over for the fag end, and the seamer does well to keep Smith and Joseph quiet in this over, with just two singles coming off it. Windies need 62 off 48 — quite gettable the way Smith’s striking the ball right now. For the Indians, it’s just a matter of two good balls.

04:06 PM (IST)

After 41 overs,West Indies 174/8 ( Odean Smith 13 , Alzarri Joseph 2)

Chahal replaces Siraj, and does well to keep Smith quiet at a time when the Jamaican is looking to smash just about anything and everything that comes his way. Three singles are all that he allows Smith and Alzarri Joseph to add to the scoreboard. Windies need 64 off 54.

04:06 PM (IST)

After 40 overs,West Indies 171/8 ( Odean Smith 12 , Alzarri Joseph 0)

Thakur gets rid of a well-set Hosein in th second delivery with a sharp bouncer. Hard-hitting all-rounder Odean Smith though, announces himself by tonking back-to-back sixes off the all-rounder in the fourth and fifth deliveries, his clean hitting eliciting a smile from the opposition captain. 12 runs and a wicket in the final over of the second powerplay. West Indies need another 67 off 60 with two wickets in hand.

04:06 PM (IST)

OUT! And now Hosein departs in the very next over, getting cramped for room by a short-of-length delivery and getting a deflection off his glove, with Pant running forward and completing a fine catch. India are just two wickets away from clinching the series now! WI 159/8

After 39 overs,West Indies 159/7 ( Akeal Hosein 34 , Odean Smith 0)

Siraj returns, replacing Hooda after the latter’s 12-run over. Chance goes begging in the third delivery after a miscued slog by Hosein, with Sundar unable to hold on to the ball after running backwards from mid on, allowing the batter to collect a brace. Single to Hosein off the fourth. Allen perishes in the fifth, nicking a short ball to the keeper, as Siraj breaks the solid-looking seventh-wicket stand. Three runs and a wicket from the over. WI need 79 off 66 with three wickets in hand.

After 38 overs,West Indies 156/6 ( Akeal Hosein 31 , Fabian Allen 13)

04:06 PM (IST)

After 37 overs,West Indies 150/6 ( Akeal Hosein 26 , Fabian Allen 12)

FOUR! Hosein’s offered a hint of width by Hooda, and he goes for the drive through the extra cover region. Two fielders converge in the deep, but are unable to prevent the boundary. Allen goes even bigger three balls later, this time getting the ball in the slot that he promptly smashes over the wide long on fence. 12 from the over, both Hosein and Allen also collecting a single each. The 150 comes up for the visitors. West Indies need 88 off 78.

04:06 PM (IST)

After 36 overs,West Indies 138/6 ( Akeal Hosein 21 , Fabian Allen 5)

04:06 PM (IST)

After 35 overs,West Indies 135/6 ( Akeal Hosein 19 , Fabian Allen 5)

04:06 PM (IST)

After 33 overs,West Indies 129/6 ( Akeal Hosein 15 , Fabian Allen 3)

Hosein and Allen keep the scoreboard ticking with a single off every ball of this over save the fifth. Hosein’s batting on 15 at the moment, looking fairly set after facing 31 balls.

04:06 PM (IST)

After 32 overs,West Indies 124/6 ( Akeal Hosein 12 , Fabian Allen 1)

No ball signalled at the start of Chahal’s eighth over, though this one’s due to an extra fielder being placed outside the circle. The leg-spinner does well to restrict Allen to a single in the free hit. Hosein collects a single three balls later. Allen attempts a reverse sweep off the last delivery, but is cut off at backward point. Four from the over. West Indies need 114 off 108 with four wickets in hand.

04:06 PM (IST)

After 31 overs,West Indies 122/6 ( Akeal Hosein 11 , Fabian Allen 0)

Deepak Hooda breaks the stand that was beginning to worry the hosts, as Brooks departs while attempting to bring up his fifty with a mighty hit over long on, getting caught by SKY in front of the boundary rope instead. Hooda later bowls a wide down leg side, with new batter Fabian Allen also coming back for a second. Five from the over. West Indies need 118 to win from 114.

04:06 PM (IST)

OUT! Maiden international wicket for Deepak Hooda as he gets rid of the dangerman Brooks, who departs for 44 and was looking to bring up his fifty with a big hit down the ground. Except he hardly got any timing on the shot, and is caught in front of the boundary rope. Brooks’ exit makes it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for Windies to chase the target down from here. After 30 overs,West Indies 115/5 ( Shamarh Brooks 43 , Akeal Hosein 9)

Chahal returns, replacing Siraj. Three singles and a double collected in this over as Brooks moves into the 40s. Windies need another 123 to win from 120 balls with five wickets in hand. As long as Brooks is able to preserve his wicket, and gets the required support from Hosein and the rest of the batting order, West Indies might just have a chance of emerging winners today.

04:06 PM (IST)

After 29 overs,West Indies 110/5 ( Shamarh Brooks 39 , Akeal Hosein 8)

FOUR! Another boundary for Brooks as he pulls a short ball towards the square leg fence off the fourth delivery. After 28 overs,West Indies 102/5 ( Shamarh Brooks 32 , Akeal Hosein 7)

EDGED… and safe! Brooks gets a thick outside edge at the start of Siraj’s second over of the new spell, the ball flying through the vacant slip region and running all the way to the third man fence. A leg bye and a single added off each of the remaining deliveries. Six from the over.

04:06 PM (IST)

OUT! Now Holder’s gone. Losing their top-scorer from the previous game at this stage is a body blow for the Windies, whose hopes of taking the series into a decider are fast fading into the oblivion. Thakur dug this one in short, and Holder took the bait, getting a thick top-edge off a pull. Hooda collects a sitter standing in front of the backward square leg boundary. WI 76/5

04:06 PM (IST)

04:06 PM (IST)

After 15 overs,West Indies 50/2 ( Shai Hope (W) 26 , Shamarh Brooks 2)

04:06 PM (IST)

After 11 overs,West Indies 40/2 ( Shai Hope (W) 17 , Shamarh Brooks 1)

Spin introduced at the start of the second powerplay with Yuzvendra Chahal, Player of the Match in the first ODI, replacing Siraj. Starts off on a tidy note, with two runs coming off it, as new batter Shamarh Brooks gets off the mark with a single.

West Indies were off to a positive start in the chase, but suddenly find themselves in a bit of trouble at the end of the first powerplay.

04:06 PM (IST)

Hope pushes the ball towards mid off next ball, collecting an easy single on offer. Loud appeal for LBW in the fifth, with umpire Virender Sharma ruling it not out. Two from Thakur’s second over, with Hope and King collecting a single each at the start of the over. Has been a sedate start from Hope and King so far in the innings. The target though, isn’t too steep and the Windies can afford to be defensive in their approach for a while.

04:06 PM (IST)

04:06 PM (IST)

After 50 overs,India 237/9 ( Yuzvendra Chahal 11 , Prasidh Krishna 0)

Some shoddy fielding allows Chahal to come back for a second run two balls later. Chahal collects a single off the fourth, leaving Krishna to face the last two deliveries. Bye off the fifth as Krishna sets off for the other end after missing the ball completely. Strangely though, Joseph chooses not to throw the ball at the non-striker’s stumps despite the batter well short of the crease. Dot to end the innings.

West Indies need 238 to level the three-ODI series!

04:06 PM (IST)

After 49 overs,India 229/9 ( Yuzvendra Chahal 4 , Prasidh Krishna 0)

After 48 overs,India 226/8 ( Deepak Hooda 29 , Yuzvendra Chahal 1)

Hooda collects a single off the first ball. Siraj then flicks through square leg off the second, comfortably coming back for a second. Siraj then looks to play a late cut next ball, only to offer Hope a simple catch off a nick, as Joseph strikes for the second time today. Chahal is the next man in, and is nearly run out while looking to get off the mark with a single right away. Appeal for LBW against Chahal in the last ball, with the Windies going for a review after a bit of consideration. Impact is Umpire’s Call even as HawkEye shows a red for ‘Pitching’ and ‘Wickets’, as umpire Virender Sharma sticks to his on-field decision of ‘Not Out’.

04:06 PM (IST)

OUT! The wickets are tumbling rapidly for the hosts at the moment, and the chances of them getting bundled out look quite high at the moment. Siraj, perhaps feeling a little more confident after collecting a brace in the previous delivery, ends up tamely nicking the ball to the keeper while looking to play a late cut. Second wicket for Joseph. IND 224/8

04:06 PM (IST)

Pooran: Bit of a niggle overnight, and he isn’t fit today. We’re definitely staying in the present, winning crucial moments. Hopefully today we get the full opportunity. It’s been a while now we haven’t been batting 50 overs, and hopefully we get that right. Skipper’s out and Odean’s in.

Deep Dasgupta and Ajit Agarkar analyse the Motera pitch:

DD: The pitch has moved a little left of the square, but the dimensions have not changed. This looks like a better pitch to bat on, more grass covering.

AA: It certainly looks a bit different. We saw a few grains on the pitch in the last game. This looks a lot better a pitch. This is going to play well. Won’t be a surprise if the team winning the toss goes on to chase.

India vs West Indies: In near-perfect win, Rohit Sharma ticks all the right boxes in Indian cricket’s fresh start

Captaincy has come to Rohit at perhaps the most opportune time in his career. He is peaking as a batsman across formats, and Kohli is an ever-present example of how an in-form captain can help mould the team in his image. It has been just one game, so it is indeed too early to judge.

Here’s Chetan Narula with the first ODI analysis

04:06 PM (IST)

Focus will be on vice-captain KL Rahul’s batting position on his return from a short break as a buoyant India aim for another demolition act against the West Indies in the second ODI to seal the three-match series in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

The India spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar ran riot as they shot out West Indies for a meagre 176 and then skipper Rohit Sharma bossed the chase with a blistering 60, as the hosts recorded an easy six-wicket win in the lung-opener at the Motera.

Infused with new energy under Rohit, India looked a completely overhauled unit after being whitewashed in South Africa and the team would certainly want to continue from where they left of on Sunday night.

The biggest positive for India is that Rohit, who had missed the South Africa series due to a hamstring injury, was in brilliant form on comeback.
