India batter Shreyas Iyer had a close call at the airport just days before his return to international cricket, as he was almost bitten by a fan’s dog. The incident, which was caught on camera, has since gone viral on social media.

Iyer recently returned to action after spending nearly two months on the sidelines due to a spleen injury he suffered during India’s tour of Australia. After completing his recovery, he made his comeback in domestic cricket by featuring in the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he proved his match fitness.

Iyer’s viral reaction as dog tries to bite him

With his place confirmed in India’s squad for the ODI series against New Zealand, Iyer was seen arriving at the airport when a group of fans approached him for autographs. The right-handed batter calmly stopped to interact with them and happily signed for supporters.

Moments later, another fan walked up carrying a dog. Iyer leaned forward to pet the dog. However, the dog suddenly tried to snap at him, forcing Iyer to quickly pull his hand back. Iyer, who escaped without any injury, handled the situation with a smile and walked away.  The clip has since spread widely on social media.

Iyer had suffered the injury while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in October last year. He underwent surgery Down Under before returning to India for further recovery. Iyer spent a few weeks at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru before returning for VHT.

In the two matches he played for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare, Iyer scored 82 and 45 runs. Iyer is the vice-captain of the Indian ODI team and is expected to feature in the first match against New Zealand in Vadodara. During his absence, Ruturaj Gaikwad got the opportunity to play at the number four position and he made the most of it by scoring a century in Raipur.
