Shreyas Iyer is set to make his return to the Indian team after being sidelined for more than two months due to injury, with the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) clearing him to compete in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand that gets underway on Sunday.
Iyer had suffered a serious spleen injury while collecting a catch during the third ODI between India and Australia in Sydney in late October. The situation quickly went from bad to worse as he reportedly fainted inside the dressing room and was later admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of a nearby hospital.
The India ODI vice-captain had since undergone rehabilitation at the CoE in Bengaluru and had recently made his return to competitive cricket in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he smashed 82 off 53 balls against Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday.
Iyer cleared to play series opener in Vadodara
Iyer had been included in India's squad for the New Zealand ODIs on Saturday, but a footnote mentioned that it was subject to a final clearance from the Centre of Excellence. According to reports, the Punjab Kings captain has now been cleared for the series opener in Vadodara on Sunday.
Besides Iyer, the upcoming series will also witness the return to Shubman Gill, who had missed the ODI leg of South Africa’s tour of India due to a neck injury, with wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul leading the Men in Blue in his absence. In Gill’s absence, Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings along with Rohit Sharma while Ruturaj Gaikwad walked in at No 4, one slot below Virat Kohli.
The ODI series will be India’s first assignment of the year, with India later facing the Black Caps in the five-match T20I series that will serve as a dress rehearsal for next month’s T20 World Cup for both teams.
