Paul Collingwood, who is a celebrated figure in English cricket thanks to his feat of winning the country’s first World Cup as captain, has reportedly been missing from the public eye in recent months. Fans are wondering about his whereabouts as he has missed several events and public appearances over the past few months.
Collingwood, who is also the current England team’s assistant coach, recently skipped a reunion for members of the 2005 Ashes-winning squad. His teammates and old friends were quick to notice that he had not joined the gathering, raising some questions about his whereabouts.
Collingwood’s last public media appearance was during the third Test against New Zealand in Hamilton last year. He left the team citing “personal reasons” in May this year and has not returned since then. He was also missing during England’s high-profile home Test series against India in July-August. There has been no official word on his status.
Why is Collingwood missing?
Over the years, Collingwood has been embroiled in multiple controversies, and many believe that this could be linked to his absence. In 2022, photos emerged showing him kissing a woman on a beach in Barbados just days after England lost to West Indies in a Test match by 10 wickets.
In 2023, former England player Graeme Swann had revealed that an inappropriate audio recording involving Collingwood was doing the rounds among cricketers. In the clip, Collingwood was allegedly involved in a two-hour-long sexual encounter with multiple women.
“Paul is driven! He’s recently divorced and he’s very driven. He’s a single man these days, so let’s face it, it sounded like he had a great night with the girls,” Swann had said in a podcast about the audio clip.
Further complicating matters, Collingwood recently faced serious tax problems back home. Investigations revealed that he was diverting sponsorship income to a personal service company he controlled. This led to a substantial tax fine of £196,000 (Rs 2 crore approx) being imposed on him.
