Former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas was on Sunday named the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), succeeding ex-India all-rounder Roger Binny – who stepped down from the role last month, with vice-president Rajeev Shukla filling in temporarily. Manhas was officially elected as the 37th BCCI president at the board’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) at their Mumbai headquarters on Sunday, becoming only the third cricketer to occupy the post after Sourav Ganguly and Binny.
Manhas had scored 15,000 runs during his senior career, including 9,714 in the First-Class format, and had led Delhi at a time when star batters such as Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were mostly away on national duty. Towards the end of his career, Manhas represented Jammu and Kashmir, his home state, in the Ranji Trophy.
The 45-year-old has also represented teams such as Delhi Capitals (formerly Daredevils) and Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. And before his appointment as BCCI president, Manhas had served as assistant coach of Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab), Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans.
How much will Manhas earn as BCCI president?
The position of BCCI president is an honorary one, meaning Manhas will not be receiving a fixed annual or monthly salary from the world’s richest cricket board. The president will instead receive substantial daily allowances and comprehensive perks that are similar to other key office bearers such as Treasurer and Secretary.
According to Economic Times, When it comes to daily allowance, Manhas will receive Rs 40,000 per day for chairing BCCI or other meetings domestically, and US$ 1,000 (INR 88,668) for meetings taking place overseas. And if required to travel for work within India, he will be receiving Rs 30,000 per day.
As BCCI president, Manhas will also be entitled to business-class travel for domestic as well as first-class/business travel for international trips, and will be staying in high-end hotel suites.
