Bangladeshi fans back their team to beat India in their Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 clash on Wednesday.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah said Bird was one of the most respected umpires in the game and someone who continued to be remembered fondly long after his retirement.

“Dickie Bird was more than just an umpire, he was a symbol of integrity in the cricketing world. With his unmistakable presence and unwavering fairness, he earned respect not just from players, but from fans globally who admired his passion for the game,” said Mr. Shah.

“To have stood in three World Cup finals and in so many iconic matches is a testament to the trust the cricketing community placed in him. But perhaps more than his remarkable career, it was his love for the sport and his enduring connection with people that truly set him apart.

“The cricket world has lost one of its most beloved figures, and we join fans around the globe in remembering a true gentleman of the game.”

The only time India deviated from the first-choice playing XI – which has Jasprit Bumrah as the lone genuine pacer and three spin options in Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and all-rounder Axar Patel – was in their final group match against minnows Oman, when their place in the Super 4s was already confirmed.

India, however, aren’t likely to bring in Arshdeep Singh or Harshit Rana, or both, or make any other change in the XI for the game against Bangladesh. For starters, there’s a spot in the final that’s on the line, with India yet to confirm a top-two finish.

And secondly, the Bangla Tigers are three-time runners-up in the Asia Cup, taking both the ODI and T20I formats into account. So not quite the same as Oman, who had made their debut in the continental showpiece event.

“By keeping everybody in suspense and not even turning up at the ground until almost the toss time, they held the game to ransom,” the Indian batting great wrote in his column for Sportstar, referring to Pakistan’s attempt to boycott their final group match against UAE amid the handshake controversy.

“There is simply no excuse for delaying the start of the game for an hour while haggling to get an apology from the match referee for something that was also not in any of the rule books,” he added.

Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets with two overs to spare in a low-scoring encounter at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Stadium – which hosted its last match of the tournament.

Shaheen Afridi (3/28) and Hussain Talat (2/18) led the way with the ball as Pakistan restricted the defending Asian T20 champions to a sub-par 133/8. The Salman Agha-led led side later suffered a collapse after a confident start, going from 45/0 to 57/4.

Talat (32 not out), however, also made a match-winning contribution with the bat and he steered Pakistan home in the company of all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz, who remained unbeaten on 38 off 24.

While Pakistan have rekindled their hopes of reaching the Asia Cup final, Sri Lanka are on the verge of getting knocked out of the tournament.

India: They will need to beat Sri Lanka in their final match of the Super 4s in order to stay in contention for a top-two finish. They can also progress to the final without a victory over the Lankans, provided Bangladesh also defeat Pakistan on Thursday, leading to a three-way tie between India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka on two points.

Bangladesh: Their final Super 4s game against Pakistan the very next day becomes a virtual semi-final, with the winner set to meet India in the final.
