India Test Squad for West Indies 2025 Highlights: Squad announcement postponed to Thursday

Shami had returned to the Indian team during the white-ball series against England earlier this year, and was also among the leading wicket-takers in the Champions Trophy in the UAE. The 35-year-old, however, had a poor run in the Indian Premier League and wasn’t considered fit enough for the five-match Test series in England, where Mohammed Siraj was the standout bowler by a fair distance.

With Jasprit Bumrah and Siraj expected to perform new-ball duties in the West Indies Tests, Shami’s inclusion appears unlikely for now, also taking into account the fact that he has fallen down the pecking order among his pacers since his ankle injury.

Iyer has written to BCCI that he needs a break from red-ball cricket due to stiffness and fatigue in his back. “He has informed us that he (Iyer) will be taking a break from red ball cricket and it’s good that he has cleared it out because selectors are now clear about his future. He won’t be playing red ball cricket in coming months and he has informed the board that he will assess his body in future in consultation with physios and trainer and take a call on it,” a BCCI source told Indian Express.

Iyer last played a Test for India in February 2024 against England and he will soon be turning 31. With the batter facing consistent back issues, he may opt out of playing in Test cricket.

The India vs West Indies series will be part of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and will be India’s first home assignment after the England series.
