Prime Minister Narendra Modi cited “Operation Sindoor” while congratulating the Indian team for their thrilling victory over Pakistan in the final of the 2025 Asia Cup in Dubai on Sunday. This after Tilak Varma led the way a brilliant 69 not out off 53 deliveries as the Indian middle-order stood tall and took their team home following a disastrous start in their chase of the 147-run target set by their arch-rivals .

“#OperationSindoor on the games field. Outcome is the same - India wins! Congrats to our cricketers,” Modi wrote on X after India chased down the target with five wickets and two deliveries to spare.

India outperform Pakistan in Asia Cup overshadowed by war and terror

The tournament had taken place under the shadow of war and terrorism, with the Indian and Pakistani teams facing each other thrice just months after the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam as well as the subsequent four-day military conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations.

India had responded to the deadly terror attack with a series of precision strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK), codenamed “Operation Sindoor”. And when the Pakistan armed forces retaliated, the Indian military shifted their attention to the country’s air defence and radar systems, and also struck 11 different air bases across the country.

As for the Asia Cup, India refused to shake the hands of their opponents in each of their three victories over Pakistan, including in the final, with captain Suryakumar Yadav also ignoring his Pakistani counterpart Salman Ali Agha during the toss each time.

Surya had also dedicated India’s seven-wicket victory over their arch-rivals in the group stage to the victims of the Pahalgam attack as well as the Indian armed forces.
