Even three weeks after India’s Asia Cup 2025 triumph, the trophy controversy involving Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi refuses to die down. India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the final, but the post-match presentation turned chaotic after Naqvi, who is also the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, reportedly took the trophy away amid a dispute over who would hand it to the Indian captain.
The Indian team refused to receive the trophy from Naqvi, citing political sensitivities and saying they would not accept it from anyone representing Pakistan cricket. Since then, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and ACC have held multiple rounds of talks, but the issue remains unresolved. Reports suggest that the BCCI is considering pushing for Naqvi’s removal from the board and may seek sanctions against him.
Former Indian umpire slams Naqvi
Meanwhile, former Indian umpire Anil Chaudhary made a sharp comment about Naqvi on The Raunac Podcast. Chaudhary joked that he didn’t even know who Naqvi was, referring to him only as “woh Sajjan jo trophy leke chale gaye” (that gentleman who took away the trophy) and “coat pant wala” (person in a suit).
“Anybody could have handed over the trophy. There were plenty of individuals representing the UAE authority as well. Nothing states that you have to collect the trophy from just one person. It has no mention in the rules but woh Sajjan trophy leke chale gaye (he took away the trophy). Like I said, there’s no rule that only one person has to hand over the trophy,” Chaudhary said.
“I don’t even know who he is. I just know Mohsin Raza. I only saw it in the media. Yeh coat pant waalo se zyada milta nahi main (I don’t meet people who wear coats and pants). I have never seen a trophy not being given. In local cricket, yes, there must have been instances, but I can’t recall,” he added.
The trophy controversy was a result of the growing tensions between the two cricket boards over the course of the Asia Cup. It all began when India refused to shake hands with Pakistan players after their group-stage win in the same tournament, a decision linked to the Pahalgam terror attacks earlier this year. India followed the no-handshake policy in their next two games against Pakistan as well.
