Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the 14-year-old prodigy who made his first-class debut at just 12, learned a harsh lesson on his vice-captaincy debut for Bihar in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy Plate Group match. Known for his explosive batting in U-19 matches and the Indian Premier League (IPL), Suryavanshi tried to play the same aggressive game, but it didn’t work out.

Just two weeks ago, Suryavanshi had smashed a brilliant 113 off 86 balls for India U19 against Australia U19 in Brisbane. But facing Arunachal Pradesh bowlers in Patna on Wednesday proved a completely different challenge. In the first innings, he faced only five balls, striking one six and two fours in the first four deliveries before being dismissed by Yab Niya on the fifth ball.

Fans react to Suryavanshi’s knock

Vaibhav Suryavanshi dismissed in the very 1st over of the innings but he scored 14 of 5 balls with 2 fours and 1 six.

Given, Bihar is playing in plate group, fastest ranji fifty and fastest ranji hundred are in some serious threat from this kid!#RanjiTrophy @ESPNcricinfo

Vaibhav Suryavanshi got out bowled on 14(5) vs Arunachal Pradesh. Niia , who previously had 16 wickets from 17 innings of 13 matches got his wicket. Vaibhav needs to learn to build his innings. There was no need to go after every ball here on the go.

It shows that Suryavanshi is still learning the patience and timing required for red-ball cricket. With time and proper guidance, he may find a balance between his aggressive style and the demands of longer-format cricket, but for now, the youngster still has a long way to go.

Suryavanshi made his IPL debut earlier this year with the Rajasthan Royals. He scored the second-fastest century in tournament’s history in just his third game.
