“We can hardly stand the wait, Please Christmas don’t be late”.
These lyrics from the popular children’s song by Alvin and the Chipmunks are probably more suited to describe the sentiments of legions of Star Wars fans, who have been waiting long and hard for the release of the next installment in the cult movie franchise.
Episode VII in the Star Wars Saga_, Star Wars_: The Force Awakens, opens in theaters on 18 December, 2015 and is directed by JJ Abrams, the man who revived the Star Trek franchise to critical acclaim.
The new Star Wars movie particularly has fans salivating, because it will see the return of old favourites like Carrie Fischer (Princess Leah), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Chewbacca and the droids C3P0 and R2D2.
And in a bid to tempt (read torture) fans with a further glimpse of what is to come, Lucasfilms released its second official teaser of the movie:
Unlike the first trailer which gave fans plenty to crib about, (such as the cross handled lightsaber seen below), the new teaser is filled with throwbacks to the original trilogy that should keep even the most diehard fan happy.
The first scene opens with the ruins of a Star Destroyer and then cuts straight into a visual of a Darth Vader’s mangled face helmet. The dialogue is also straight out of the iconic scene in Return of the Jedi, when Hamill reveals that Leia is in fact, his sister when he says, “The force has always run strong in my family”.
Cut to a few cursory action shots, and then the cherry on top at the end. An aged but no less badass Han Solo says “Chewie, we’re home” while Chewbacca agrees. Or we assume so from the tenor of his ‘Ngaaar"
And because we believe in making our audiences happy, here is a clip of Benedict Cumberbatch doing a Chewbacca impersonation as a slightly worried looking Harrison Ford looks on.
And because you’ll want to read more about this clip and what we can derive from the few seconds of footage we have been treated to, here are some links:
