Acclaimed director Mira Nair’s film The Reluctant Fundamentalist, which is based on Mohsin Hamid’s book by the same name, will be released in 300 screens across country on 17 May by PVR Pictures. Calling it an “international thriller”, Nair said, “It’s a film about modern Pakistan, a place about which we don’t read about in newspapers.”
Nair said it took her five years to complete the film and is really excited to see how people react to it.
“The film released in the US 10 days ago but for me the Indian and Pakistani audiences are the most important audiences,” she said.
PVR Pictures has been distributing films for the last 10-12 years. Talking to Entrepreneur, Sanjeev Bijli, Joint MD, PVR Ltd., said, “We have been actively working to get national and International films to Indian audiences. We thought The Reluctant Fundamentalist is one such film.”
Bijli says, through PVR Pictures, he gets an opportunity to bring films to Indian audiences which otherwise wouldn’t come.
About the performance of The Reluctant Fundamentalist at the Box Office, he says he is skeptical that it will touch the Rs. 100-crore mark. “It’s only certain kinds of movies that make Rs. 100 crore, so we can’t be so disillusioned also. But we are
hoping it does good business.”
However, he is bullish about how PVR Pictures is shaping up—“It’s a cash flow business, and we posted a net profit of about Rs. 4 crore last year.” This year PVR Pictures will release at least 30 films this year.
