Milan Luthria always had a penchant for places, a certain milieu that became an integral character amid the densely populated plots and rustic and stylish people. He almost sucked us with the dunes of Rajasthan in his debut Kachche Dhaage, even though John Matthew Matthan (another debut making director) did it far better with the same state in the same year with Sarfarosh. Luthria then moved on to Mumbai in Taxi No 9211 and Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. For his web series debut, he opts for Delhi, in a period setting.
And just like _Bambai Meri Jaan_, the series is based in 1962, there’s prettiness, swag, style, and those inevitable Milan Luthria one-liners and contagious dialogues. At the heart of the show is Tahir Raj Bhasin, who may be a little young to carry the weight of the heroism that his role Arjun requires, his commanding screen presence and sincerity add up to the pulp of the material. Then there’s Vinay Pathak, always a delight to watch, whether he’s a funny or frustrated or absolute filth. Anupriya Goenka walks on a turf she has never explored.
She was the go-to lady when it came to the portrayal of righteousness (War, Padmaavat, Asur, Criminal Justice), but here, it’s refreshing to see her display oomph and ooze sexiness. Even when Luthria and his co-writer Suparn Varma stuff the show with punchlines, the earnestness of the actress doesn’t peel off. The show has all the elements one associates with the filmmaker now- Greed, Sass, Bravado, but since it’s OTT, he teases us with erotica too.
Sultan Of Delhi is a sincere attempt. It’s based on the book by Arnab Ray by the same name, it’s not great but qualifies for an almost satisfying watch.
