On 23 April’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, much to the fans surprise, Dempsey’s character, Derek Shepherd gets hit in a car crash and slips into coma. In the end, his wife, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) takes him off life support, thus ending McDreamy’s run in the show.

The scene where Meredith bids farewell to Derek is very emotional with Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars playing in the background.  There is a montage of Derek and Meredith’s scenes, which ends with the scene in which Meredith first bid goodbye to Derek.

Dempsey’s Dr Derek “McDreamy " Shepherd has been one of the most popular characters of Grey’s Anatomy. His death may effect the show’s viewership significantly, but with an average viewership of 11.6 million, the makers are all set to make the 12th season of Grey’s Anatomy.

Talking about Dempsey’s exit, creator of Grey’s Anatomy, Shonda Rhimes said , ““I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our McDreamy. Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example — happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true — of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all.”

We have only one thing to say to those heartbroken to see McDreamy pass on: watch Game of Thrones and you’ll be relieved that Derek lasted as long as he did.
