Deep in the heart of Nepal’s remote Upper Mustang region, a battle is underway to preserve Tibetan culture. The former Buddhist kingdom’s heritage escaped the Cultural Revolution which hit neighbouring China, but its monuments are now under threat, vulnerable to erosion from wind and rain. The US Ambassador of Nepal – amongst others – is worried.
When an earthquake struck Nepal in 2015, killing nearly 9,000 people, the shrines here were left unscathed. Other monuments did not fare as well. In the medieval walled capital of Lo Manthang, the quake ripped apart 500-year-old murals and ruptured the drainage system causing water damage.
