Disney featured an inter-racial lesbian couple in its television for pre-schoolers called ‘Doc McStuffins’. While the episode didn’t revolve around the couple, this was seen as a major step forward in sexual minority representation in mainstream animated TV series. Comics have generally been more inclusive than their animated TV counterparts, with channel producers fearing backlash from conservative parents. But through cartoons such as ‘Doc McStuffins’, ‘Loud House’, and ‘Clarence’, the television is slowly warming up to the prospect of putting lesbian and gay characters in primetime TV.
