US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that his administration will “soon” impose reciprocal tariffs on countries like India and China, reiterating the same commitment he made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the US.
Trump said, “We’ll soon impose reciprocal tariffs because that means they charge us, we charge them. It’s very simple. Whatever a company or a country, such as India or China, charges us, we want to be fair, so reciprocal. Reciprocal meaning, ‘they charge us, we charge them.’”
Trump made the statement while speaking at the swearing-in of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Friday.
“We haven’t done that, we have never done that. We are getting ready to do it,” Trump said.
Trump also joked that “tariff” used to be his favourite word, but he had to move it to fourth place after “family,” “love,” and “God.” He added, “Let’s put God first—because we don’t want to take any chances.”
The development came after Trump, in an interview with Elon Musk, said he told PM Modi that India would also face reciprocal tariffs and that no one could challenge him on trade rules.
Since his campaign in last year’s US elections, Trump has long criticised India’s high tariffs and has even referred to India as a “big abuser” of trade.
